So I go into the pro shop at the Kettler Center (where the Caps practice in DC), to look for some equipment for my nephew. I took my skates in for sharpening as it was opportune. While I was getting my skates sharpened, I chatted with the guy there and he was right in that I should bring him in rather than try and guess on sizing (my nephew's from Louisiana so not as much equip down there). So I start looking at some of the equipment there and I was floored by the prices now. I guess its technology but man! I still use the same sticks that I have used from back 10 years ago-translation-wood. My gloves are all leather, now they look like they're all cloth. Some of the sticks they had were amazing. super light and all one piece. I remember the better guys were using shafts with blades but only saw a couple of them and get this..1 wood stick in the whole place. Same ol reliable Sherwood 5030 stick but only 1!! One of the Reebok sticks I picked up looked real cool and again, felt like air but the pricetag... $219!! Would I be pissed if I broke that one lol. G1

Haha. Yeah man.

Sticks are frigan expensive. I won't pay more than about $110 for any sticks I use. However, I won't use wood sticks again. Once I switched to one piece composites I couldn't go back.

I've got an Easton S13 which cost me about $110 and a Warrior Dolomite (the Dolo was a warranty replacement for the Warrior Hitman I snapped. They upgraded me from middle of the road Hitman to one of the near top of the line Dolo's when they replaced it). Fortunately, I rarely break any sticks. Though I did break two within a weekend tourney back in November.

My other gear I just got on clearance. Buy online dude, it's the best way to do it.

Gloves were like $40 for me and they're a synthetic covering, not leather, but you can still get leather if you look around a bit.

Skates I totally bought used on eBay.. $150 for barely used Graf G3's.

Just gotta look around a bit and for a kid, they don't need anything top of the line as I'm sure you know. I'd check hockeygiant.com, totalhockey.net, and hockeymonkey.com. Usually good deals and clearance on all of them.

yeah it's gotten out of control for sure. I ref minor hockey and all the way down to the 5 and 6 year olds, they're ALL playing with these Easton Synergy sticks that cost more than every stick I used in my playing days combined.

I picked up a Warrior Dolomite (saw Craig mentioned that one) at a golf tournament silent auction for $40 though which was a steal so that's what I carry now.

I haven't even used mine yet. Once I broke two warriors in a weekend I decided to switch to Easton and give them a shot. I also changed by blade pattern out. So the dolo is my backup. I went to a Zetterberg pattern which has only a slight curve away from the Draper pattern on the Warrior that has a deep mid curve with an open face. I feel like I'd shoot the puck into the rafters with it now.

$40 is a frigan steal on that stick. Most sites I'm seeing sell them for $170.

Even better, it came along with a pullover jacket too...lol

They had a 2nd one but it was left handed. I should have picked it up anyway and resold it....It went for even less than mine.

Yeah, I haven't bought any equipment as I play so rarely(free times rare when you're a chef). I still use my old sherwood 5060 gloves, cooper techniflex pads, ccm super tacks. My sticks are wood jofa's and koho revolutions. Used to play goal but I got rid of almost all my goalie stuff, it was all cooper legends. I would definately buy online but for my nephew, we need to get him fitted. I have't seen him since he was born so I won't even guess sizes. G1

Ha. I still have a couple old Koho sticks around the house. I think one here with me in Texas and a couple back at my parents house in MA that I use for pond hockey when I go back and visit. Loved those sticks.

I try to buy most of my stuff off of hockeymonkey.com, and buy clearance if I can.

My old CCM Tacks finally died a couple weeks back, so I bought some CCM U-Pro skates from the monkey, but the '08 model. $639 MSRP for $169, cheaper than I bought my Super Tacks in 2002. Lots of good clearance deals there to be had, especially skates. I just try them on at a local place for sizing, then buy at the monkey.

I used the Lemieux pattern Kohos when I first started playing.

Been using Sherwoods with a Coffey pattern for many years now, moving from the 5530s through the 9950s, and now using the composite 9950. Love the Coffey curve.

Jagr pattern when I was using my old Koho sticks. The Coffey pattern is interesting. Isn't that the one that sharp curve at the toe?

I have an old blue wooden Sherwood that must be 20 years old. It was an extra that I never ended up using and it ended up being stored in my br closet at my parents house. The price tag is still on it. . .$8.99

It does have an odd toe curve, seems to work well for my unorthodox slapshot, Craig.

Able to get the composite ones for about $90 here, and all my composites have lasted close to a year, so I am happy with it....better than when I was going through 12 fiberglass 9950s a year at @ $40 apiece.

Cool. Yeah, I have zero slapshot, which explains greatly why I never progressed past JV high school hockey and into mid-higher level beer league. lol. Snap and Wrist is all I've got. I guess I was just never taught a proper slapshot on skates. I can do it in street hockey, just not on the ice. idk..

i played for 11 years when i was younger. im playing in an adult league now and i just bought an easton S7 zetterburg and i LOVE it. prices have changed so much in just a few years...composites are the way to go tho...love my stick. i was still used to my wood ones from when i played and now i have a sick backhand shot. its amazing what new tech will do. i hate to say it but these composite sticks literally made me a much better player.

Took me years after learning to skate to get a good slapper, Craig. I would hit about 1 of 10, just like a blind squirrel finding a nut. I have no idea what changed, but one day I just "got it" and have had a pretty decent slapshot since. And the composite stick only makes it better.
