Anyone here bet (semi) seriously on sports at all? I've been doing decently well with betting hockey this year and figured I'd throw up some of my picks/reasonings here and maybe we can all make a few bucks if we put our heads together....

I'll post my football picks too, and whatever else I degenerately waste money on (I've been known to bet on just about anything - including Ski Jumping...) and try and keep a running tally of how I do.

Total as of 01/01/11 -- 14 - 19 - 0

Here's todays NHL action. If anyone needs any help understanding what any of the numbers mean or getting action up, feel free to drop me a pm.

Carolina @ Toronto (-115, 5.5)
Atlanta @ Pittsburgh (-177, 5.5)
Montreal @ Washington (-176, 5.5)
Boston @ Tampa Bay (-119, 5.5)
Chicago @ St Louis (-109, 5)
Dallas @ Nashville (-127,5)
Philadelphia @ Vancouver (-140, 5.5)
Buffalo @ Edmonton (odds not posted yet)
Anaheim @ Phoenix (odds not posted yet)

Will update later in the day with my picks, but initial thoughts are to play Carolina, Chicago, Philadelphia and possibly Atlanta for a price. There may also be a value play on the Oilers but will have to see what odds get posted.

I used to be a pretty serious sports better pre wife and kids. Would like to get back into it at some point, but it's just so time consuming (at least for me it was).

I'm just going to go game by game with my picks/reasons - not sure what my action will be yet but lets see how this goes. Feel free to post any thoughts or opinions too please.

Carolina @ Toronto (-115, 5.5)
Toronto just plain sucks, and although they beat the Devils in their last (doesn't everyone beat the Devils this year though??) their #1 goalie is still out and they lean on Gustavsson to start his 7th straight. The kid had one win in December prior to the devils game...Carolina is 9-3 vs the Leafs in the past 3 seasons, and has won 4 straight in Toronto.
Action: Carolina -105 and over 5.5 total.

Atlanta @ Pittsburgh (-177, 5.5)
This is just one of those games I have a feeling about...The Pens played terribly in their last, losing 3-1 to Ottawa, while the Thrashers played a tight match against Tampa Bay who have been one of the hottest teams in the league, losing 3-2 in overtime. The Pens may be looking past their two games this week against Atl and NYI towards this weekend's winter classic game scheduled for Saturday at Heinz field. The Thrashers have been playing too well to overlook at this price I think.
Action: Take Atlanta at +160

Montreal @ Washington (-176, 5.5)
These two teams are going in completely opposite directions, the Habs having dropped 6 of 8, and the Caps winning 3 of 4 - their only loss coming via a shootout vs. the Pens on the weekend. Washington will be looking to avenge their playoff collapse to the Habs last year, and with Ovy waking up from his scoring slump, it could be a rough night on the Montreal bench I think.
Action: Washington -176

Boston @ Tampa Bay (-119, 5.5)
This should be a great game and I'm really looking forward to watching it. Boston squeaked out a shootout win last night against Florida but trailed a fair portion of the game, while Tampa has been one of the hottest teams in the league this month. Boston destroyed Tampa in their last meeting on Dec 5th by an 8-1 margin but the Lightning have been rolling ever since and will be looking to avenge that loss on their home ice.
Action: Tampa Bay -120

Chicago @ St Louis (-109, 5)
Yet another game that should be great to watch. The Hawks come in to this one on a 4 game winning streak and having won 6 of 10. Early word is that Patrick Kane will also be returning from injury tonight so that's a big help. The Blues have also won 6 of 10, but aren't scoring many goals and seem to be relying heavily on goalie Jaroslav Halak to help them squeak out points.
Action: Chicago -105

Dallas @ Nashville (-127,5)
Two teams who could both use a win here, Dallas comes in having lost 2 straight while Nashville has lost their last 4. Both teams were shut out in their last game as well, which could lean towards a bet on the under 5 total. Truly anyone could win this in a 1-0 or 2-1 type game, but go with the Stars who are fighting for top spot in the pacific division and take the extra odds.
Action: Dallas +115 and Under 5 total

Philadelphia @ Vancouver (-140, 5.5)
Two of the top teams in the league in this one - Philly comes off the Christmas break after losing an embarrassing one at home to Florida 5-0. The flew in to Vancouver a day early to help offset the time difference and had a good skate yesterday according to coach Laviolette. The Canucks earned a win over the Oilers in their last, and Luongo can easily steal a game for them if he plays well. Boucher should return to the net for the Flyers, and he's unbeaten in regulation through his last 7 starts.
Action: Flyers +125

Buffalo @ Edmonton (-120, 5.5)
Buffalo is just in the toilet lately, losing an ugly one to the Flames just last night by a 5-2 margin. They've also lost 9 of their last 10 on the road. Sabres are also without their leading scorer Derek Roy who is gone for the season. The Oilers gave Vancouver all they could handle in their last game before the Canucks overtook them, but they've been playing some better hockey of late. I'm taking the Oil but I don't feel good about it...lol
Action: Edmonton -120

Anaheim @ Phoenix (-150, 5.5)
This is the last of a 7 game road trip for the Ducks, and Phoenix gets their starting goalie back from injury. Phoenix has been playing well defensively and won their last with a shutout. No real strong feeling on this one, but take the 'Yotes and under 5.5 total just for fun.
Action: Phoenix -150 and under 5.5 total

Well, I have an acct on an online site, but I don't bet too often. If I do bet, it is like $5 max. I always put $10-15 down at the beginning of the year for the Cincinnati Reds and Cincinnati Bengals to make the WS/Super Bowl. Yeah, those haven't paid off. LOL

Dropped what little I had left this year taking too many parlays on NFL or taking heavy favorite Spanish soccer teams to win. Oh well, had fun trying.

This is not a Soccer Troll Thread... I Played the game for 24 yrs so I DO LOVE IT... HOWEVER... LaLigua, Serie A etc... are the "skilled guys" or is that Skilled guys so long as nobody else is on the pitch...? The REAL players, are the EPL and Scottish (IMO)... those dudes are Skilled TOUGH guys... they score, defend and have low scores just like those other ones... they just do it all standing on their feet for a whole game! lol!

Ugly night all around, but still "only" went 5-7. A few of the games could have gone either way though, not feeling too bad about it. There are a few road teams tonight that I think are giving good odds.

New York Rangers (-119, 5) @ New Jersey Devils
The Devils are the worst team in the league this year, sitting 24 points behind the Rangers in the standings. This is hardly a road game for New York and given the crappy crowds the Devils have been drawing this year there may actually be more Rangers supporters at this one. Take the Rangers, heavy at this price.
Action: New York Rangers W

Pittsburgh Penguins (-180, 5.5) @ New York Islanders
Can't see this going any other way than a Pens W, but 180 is a big price to lay for a team on the road who played at home the night prior and had to travel. Put the Pens in a parlay ticket.
Action: Pittsburgh L

San Jose Sharks (-119, 5.5) @ Minnesota Wild
Both teams need a pick-me-up here, but the Wild have dropped back to back games off the break, to Detroit and Columbus. San Jose is the more talented squad so I'm taking them in this one.
Action: San Jose L

Detroit Red Wings @ Dallas Stars (-115, 5.5)
Detroit could very easily take this one but they've been hit by a bunch of injuries, and I hate picking every road team on the list, so I'm going with the Stars here. Dallas are 6-2-2 in their last 10, and have beaten the Wings in both meetings this season.
Action: Dallas L

Carolina Hurricanes @ Ottawa Senators (-150, 5.5)
No real strong feelings on this one, it could go either way depending on which team shows up to play. Ottawa have been terrible this year, performing well below expectations -- but they beat mighty Pittsburgh in their last, almost ending Sid the Kid's point streak before he scored a meaningless goal while down 3 with moments to go in the 3rd. Carolina on the other hand gritted out a win last night in Toronto that they probably didn't deserve. The Leafs played well, and easily could have taken the W but for the efforts of G Cam Ward. Taking the Sens but tough to lay much at this price.
Action: Ottawa L

LA Kings (-116, 5) @ Phoenix Coyotes
LA are 7-2-1 in their last 10 and proving to be one of the top teams in the Western Conference. Phoenix has been inconsistent at best, and beaten handily just last night by Anaheim in their home barn. Take the Kings here, likely heavy as well if the price stays around -115.
Action: Los Angeles L

I like sports and I like gambling, but mixing hockey and gambling is a no-win situation for me!?! LOL I like hockey and am still a NHL fan, but I moved away from Minnesota 11 years ago and no longer have my own team to root for. I moved away before the Wild started but will root for them now, but I don't really have enough loyalty to watch them especially living in a NHL-less Seattle.

I went to a bunch of Ducks games when I lived in SoCal for a couple years and also went to a USA Olympics game this year which was great, but for the most part I'm clueless about the NHL right now.

Okay, NOT playing these games myself because I don't have an account, but just for fun I'd take...

Nebraska -13.5 tonight
Mia Fl -2.5 tomorrow
SC -3 tomorrow

Again, I am NOT betting on any of these, just picking games for fun.

Minnesota over Nashville L
Columbus over Ottawa W
Detroit over NY Islanders L
Philadelphia over Anaheim L
Vancouver over Dallas W
St Louis over Phoenix W

wow is that a parlay? tough to have to pick a game to be won/lost in a shootout man.

I think I was jinxing myself there posting picks last week -- I was overanalyzing things. If anyone believes it, I actually hit Russia last night at +586 in the junior game....Only reason was that I wanted to have some action on the game but wasn't willing to lay the -600 to take Canada (on a $20 wager I would have 'won' $3.33 if I took Canada. Russia paid out just shy of $140 on the same bet...lol)

Picked a shootout a few weeks ago and got paid $60 on a $2.00 bet. A shootout counts as a tie on Sport Select.
