I see all sorts or standards used when someone reviews a cigar. CA has a 100 point system, Smoke has a star rating, and just the simple comment "this cigar is a good cigar". I have seen the 100 point system used here on BOTL, is there any preference on how you review your cigars.

Thanks, Doug

When I write reviews I try to make them descriptive and the quality of the cigar and my enjoyment comes through in a way that suites my tastes and anxiety about any sort of scale or rating. my 94 may not mean much if you don't like a certain flavor profile, wrapper, etc.

This is not so say you can't do both. I try to end with a comment about my willingness to buy a box or always want to a 5er in my locker, etc. There may also be a need to communicate a sense of imperativeness like, "get'em before they are gone!" or "this stick is worth the search if it's a HTF.

Good question.

I don't really rate cigars using any kind of detailed scale. I simply comment on the various factors (burn, construction, flavors, etc. ). At the end of my review I state whether the experience was positive or negative, if the price paid makes the cigar a good value and if I'll be smoking more of these in the future.

Yeah, the points thing for me makes the review take more time, plus it's all about the overall experience as someone else will relate to it...Hard to convert that into a point scale!
For example if I say the wrapper is dark brown and oily, that is a description that someone can relate to and visualize. If I just say the wrapper is nice...8/10, that gives the reader the opposite effect.

I am not a big fan of ratings. I just like to describe what I am experiencing, and let that speak for the cigar.

I write allot of reviews but I've never given one a rating because I just don't think there is a point, its too subjective. A cigar that may be mind blowing to me might just be okay to someone else, with that said I make a point of commenting how much I enjoyed the cigar, but thats as far as I go.

I don't put much stock in a numerical value for a cigar review. A number doesn't tell me diddly about how much I enjoyed (or will enjoy) a particular cigar, nor does it tell me what flavors were present. I prefer descriptive reviews and I do like pics, but that's not necessary if the review is well written.

It all comes down to if you like the cigar or not. Because someone puts a number on the cigar, does not mean that someone else may agree. It is very subjective.

I use letter grade ratings, stupid student inside of me.
A - box buy
B - five pack/have a few in the humidor
C - I'd buy a single here and there, but it's not a regular purchase
D - I'd smoke it, but probably not want to pay for it again
F - I'm definitely giving this stick to PLUSH.

I don't put too much stock in them though... Numerically I would screw things up because a 75 in my book means that I would buy a single... which highlights one of the countless problems with the numbers.

Been QUITE some time since I wrote a review; but I've tried several roads, see which one's me cup o' tea. What I recommend is just write up what you think of said stick. Then, when done, choose what is important for you to "grade" and try and do it. Whatever comes out as a first rating system, that just might be it; so try it a few times.Worst-case scenario you just go with the other one.

Ditto, I hate the number system, i think this is why most people don't want to do reviews. I just want a review to be descriptive as possible. the construction, draw, burn, flavors and enjoyment without having to assign some arrbitrarry numerical value to it.

I'm torn because of how I "grew up" reading CA and just discovered other cigar magazines in the last few years. If the reviewer writes in a style I can agree with, makes sense and is as honest as possible that works for me.

Sadly I don't agree with most reviewers these days.

For my review site I dont use a ratings. I give my impression of the cigar and thats it, whether I enjoyed it or not. One problem i have with numbered ratings is that a certain amount of points goes towards construction and performance, and a cigar can taste like crap but still get plenty of points if it burns and draws perfectly. This is really only a problem on the 100 point scales for me personally. Alot of the points come from taste, but you are still going to get a 75+ rating if it smokes well and the taste isnt great.
