Ok, the wife gives me her credit card today and says, " I really want to buy you some nice cigars for Valentines but I dont want to goof up and get you something you dont like, Just go online and get what you like as long as it is not over 130 bucks."

So I am like, sweet , great gift babe thanks.

Then I get online and get stuck.

I am just going to get a box of Arturo Fuente Chateau series, because these are my regular smokes.

I notice they come in three different kinds.

Natural, Maduro, and Sun Grown.

I have the natural ones and they are what I smoke. But i am perplexed because I really want to try the same cigar in a different wrapper but have nothing to go on with the other wrappers.

I have had a maduro but only in a macanudo cigarillo and they were nice dark and tasty but dont know how that would translate on a bigger full flavored cigar.

I have nothing to go on as to the taste a Sun Grown wrapper is, I would imagine its a medium kinda in between maduro and natural? But thats just a guess.

I just cant get myself to hit the BUY button because I dont know if I should stay with the natural ones or get something with a little more body to it and flavor.

Any input on what I should expect pallet wise on either Maduro or Sungrown would be appreciated. Most ppl I know only smoke the occasional cigar and they are of course natural ones so they cant offer any insight either.

Well it sounds like you've got your regular smokes nailed down so why not just buy some 5ers of different things to try. Get some Chateau Sungrown and Maduro, then whatever else sounds good til you've hit your limit.

I find that "most" of the time, I get more of a deep chocolaty type flavor profile, especially at the end, in maduro cigars. This is not true for some that I have tried, as some are "painted" and others are actually fermented to the maduro stage, so it is really hard for anyone to pin-point a flavor/taste profile for any one wrapper unless the person has tried each kind in the line.
Right now I have been buying as many differnt types of cigars as possible to try to find the type of tobacco I am into, buying 5ers of stuff works really well, plus gives you diversity when you go to pick out a stick for that night. You would be able to get the 3 different 5ers with that 130, plus you can get something nice for a celebratory cigar as well.
You really do have a lot of options, no sense in buying the same thing over and over if you can find something else that you love as well :stretchgr

What they all said, expand your horizons. Head over to JR or Cigars International or something along those lines and get a variety of new cigars to try out. Nice gift from the lady, congrats.

Good Wife! lol

But I would try and snag some samplers and expand your horizons with "free" funds...

Seriouscigars.com has some great prices on Tats/Illusiones

Really enjoy those maduro chateaus. Fuller flavored compared to the natties but without a nicotine kick. If you want to explore further down the maduro path, you may want to pickup fivers of padron maduro delicias and tatuaje 7th reservas. Both also should get better with some age so it would be fun smoking 1 of each vitola every few months to compare how the flavors in each mature and evolve.

I really like the fuente Sungrown wrappers. But it sounds like you are just starting out. With $130 you could really do some damage on some samplers, and get your eyes opened a bit to the wide world of cigars.

Indeed. I would pick up some singles from SeriousCigars or a local shop.

The people on this board can give you some great recommendations.

These guys are right. Variety is the spice of life my friend. go with their recs of getting 5ers to see if you like the other varieties. I'm a newbie so I'm trying as much different stuff as I can. You may be pleasantly surprised with what you discover.

The sungrowns are excellent, especially considering the price point. The sungrown wrapper is going to give you a spicier flavor than either the naturals or maduros, but I think that wrapper is perfectly suited for the chateau blend.

I decided to just reorder what I have on hand for the moment. That would be 10 Hemingway Best Sellers and 10 Chateau Fuente Naturals.

I really dont have a large humidor at the moment but I will once my tax money comes in so that had a hand im my decision plus I know I like those.

Im not big on smaplers, I may be new to do this as a full fledged hobby but ive tried several brands just havent had the pleasure of some of the higher priced cigars, and memory escapes me on how the maduros i did have really tasted.

But once I get a bigger humidor ill definately order a wide range to try out, just want to make sure I have room for them.

Also, because it is so cold out a smaller cigar right now is perfect.

Once it becomes golf weather and beach weather ill be moving back to the big boys and enjoying an hour or more stick.

Here is an alternate solution... get your mailbox bombed up...

PM me your addy and I'll drop in the mail a Hemingway Maduro and a Hemingway Rosado so you can try the two... and then for future box purchases you'll know.

When I found something that looked good, I used to go to a local B&M and try to get couple of sticks just to see if I would like them before committing to a box purchase on line, that way I could sample the sticks right away without waiting for the cigars to rest from the trip

Orangedog is right on the money...have a few BOTL here see if they have one or two two send your way to try. You get your new sticks to sample and you make some new friends to trade with. The guys on the site are great...I have had some great things show up from trades.
