Ive really been enjoying some of the cigar radio feed I saw on here, interesting stuff when driving to class or walking the dog.

One thing on dog watch radio they talked about was they believed that factory seconds werent actually cigars that didnt pass the bar, but that they were purposely made as seconds.

I never really thought of that before, he based this on the fact that other big name factories had bins which held certain cigars that didnt pass inspection due to certain flaws such as discoloration on the wrapper and so on, but that these companies dont resell them as seconds.

Now of course this is speculation on his part, im not going to name the company in question because I dont believe that matters, but it is a more mainstream company.

I still say smoke what tastes good and that they just use the term seconds as a sort of brand name but what r you guys opinions on factory seconds, just something I saw as interesting.

NOTE: Im no snob, a can barely afford name brand cigars, so this is not an attempt of sticking my nose in the air and turning them away, just wanted everyones opinions

I have no problem smoking seconds as long as they are priced right. I believe 2nd were origionally rejected cigars but sold so well that it turned into a marketing scheme. Too much inventory for all these to be "rejected" cigars. I have no insider knowledge but if your a premium cigar manufactuer and this many rejects keep appering you would fire the rollers, get tobacco from a different source, etc. etc.

I don't think most companies intentionally make seconds. Why would they? Same cigar selling for less, what's the point?

Because when rocky gives the big catalog companies huge discounts that allow the catalogs to grossly undersell their B&M competitors, the B&M's get annoyed.

Calling them "seconds" makes them a different product. The seconds are a marketing gimmick.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with them and they generally smoke, taste and look just fine, but they aren't real factory seconds.

In general, IMO, seconds seem to improve a lot more with some age. Read somewhere that true seconds/rejects are not aged as long as firsts as they want to blow them out fast and get their working capital back. Other seconds are actually purposely cheaper blends just to target a lower price point.
You also might want to consider private labels that are sometimes seconds or firsts of well known brands. One good example is the famous buenos maduritos which allegedly is the same blend as the plascencia TNT or the nhc elo's (now discontinued) which could not be anything else but seconds of this site's favorite nic brands.

Just another way for companies to market product in my opinion.

I've had the Perdomo ESV91 seconds from CI and think they are great!

This is the first thing I thought of. Seriously, who makes "Counterfeits" of their own brand?
