In light of some recent activities that left me feeling pretty stupid, and like an ass, I feel it's necessary to confess some of my "cigar sins".

Cigar knowledge: After almost a year and a half smoking cigars and being a member here, my knowledge has increased from none to next-to-none. I feel like I really haven't learned or retained nearly as much as I should have by now. If someone were to show me pictures of 100 cigars, I'd probably be able to identify 3-5 of them (being generous). Worse, if someone listed 100 cigars and asked me to describe what they look like, I'd maybe get 1-2 right. Forget about accurate length/RG.

Pricing: If I haven't bought a particular cigar before, or in some cases just happen to remember seeing a listed price, I have absolutely no idea how much they cost. Using that list of 100 cigars, I would maybe again get a reasonably correct price range on 3-5 of them. Right now, many of the cigars I have in my humi are the result of being bombed, or buying them from another BOTL. The others I've had in there for long enough that I don't remember what I paid.

Posting: As you read above, I don't have much to contribute to this site. I stay here because, honestly, I've had a real hard time making new friends since I moved back to WI, and only barely know 2 other people who smoke cigars. So, I spend a lot of my free time on BOTL. And without knowing jack about cigars, most of my posts are nonsense, or about the general discussion topics. I'm not really sure where I'm going to go from here. Maybe I should take a break from BOTL, or just try to sit in the background and keep my thoughts to myself.

Brotherhood: I've noticed more and more threads lately where people are airing grievances (sorta like this one) and I find that troubling. Not that people are voicing concerns, but that there seems to be more and more concerns to be voiced. Sometimes I let these things that really shouldn't even be on my radar affect me to the point I get angry at the offenders. That's just not healthy.

Finally, and not the least in my mind: I've only smoked 3 cigars since Thanksgiving; and 2 of them were a bit disappointing. Mostly, it's been because of the weather, sometimes just too busy. Either way, it just plain sucks.

Anyway, that's it for now. I just felt the need to purge some of these thoughts. Thank you for any understanding, and please keep the blasting to a minimum. :)

I wouldn't sweat it man. We all have different reasons for being here. Personally I like the social aspect of BOTL and welcome discussion on things not necessarily cigar related (in the appropriate place of course). As for retaining info, well some are better at it than others...besides you're not being tested. As for not smoking as much...well sometimes life is just a bitch. Don't we all wish we could be guaranteed cigar time . Now say five hail Pepins and you're square .

Wow don't be to tough on yourself. All you really need to know about cigars is if you like what your smoking. It is not the Quantity we smoke but the quality of the smoke and people we share em with.

That's my number one. I just reached 1000 posts not too long ago, and it dawned on me how pointless most, if not all, of my posts are. I don't have a whole lot in common with most people... and know not a single person here who smokes cigars. So, this is a place where I have something in common with people that we enjoy.

Dude, I started out like you, Zero knowledge and nothing to add but B.S. Shit half of what i post is B.S. I've been thru patches where I didn't post but once or twice e a week
This too shall pass.

Voicing an opinion is part of any brotherhood, otherwise it is under totalitarian rule. We just don't like to let it get disrespectful. None of us can be experts at everything. We contribute intelligence when we can. Otherwise we set up some good banter. Or you can be incredibly funny, like myself. In which case almost every post has to have some form of attempt at comedy. Of course that doesn't always work either...lol

1) There is no test, you won't be graded. Furthermore, that kind of pressure goes against a lot of why I smoke. The ritual, enjoyment, and camaraderie are what I take enjoyment from, not being an encyclopedia of all things related to cigars.

2) We are all here for different reasons, as was stated by someone else. I don't look to each member for the same thing aside from respect and BOTL spirit. Imagine how boring this place would be if we were all alike?

3) Dude, the weather is killing you and your hobby. I smoked 3 cigars saturday that I know to be great and they all tasted like dog food. I may have been ill, I may have fried my palate the day before, or maybe I just wasn't in the mood. Maybe you are a social smoker and enjoying cigars on your own just isn't your thing?

4) CHILL. You AND are wrong. You are both valued brothers. I remember how cool it was when Alex left to go to school (or back) and everybody was sending him stuff so he wasn't empty-handed or wouldn't go broke. I remember it like it was yesterday and I remember how grateful Alex was.

We all contribute differently, and when, what, and how often changes for reasons that vary from person to person.

I have to agree with Quintero on this one. Grab a great stick and a comfortable place and enjoy something good while relaxing.

Be well, my friend!

I would say this is a reason alot of us are here on BOTL. We make alot of mistakes not just with our hobbies but life in general. It's nice to know there's a place we can go to "air it out" so to say. I completely understand the friend issue more than you know. BOTL has helped me fill a void in my life with great friendships and knowledge.
To me you are always welcome to confess whetever is on your mind!

I don't know you personally, but I'd venture a guess this is the real root of your feelings. Making new friends when you are older, past 25, is a very difficult thing to do. By 30 most folks are quite set in their ways and views and finding like minded people you can share your own thoughts with can be challenging...if not intimidating. With the internet it is now easy to fill that gap with forums and chat boards just like this one. However, the disconnected nature of the internet doesn't really allow for true human interaction. It's lacking something if you will. My guess is that you are lonely as hell right now. You are probably married, but a wife can't fill the void that a mans good buddies can and do.

Add to that your in Wisconsin in the dead of winter. Seasonal depression or generally gloomy feelings are a real thing.

My advice is to go a local B&M. Even if it is all the way across town. Make yourself hang out there for a few hours even if you can't smoke there. Heck be honest with the owner/workers and say man this winter is killing me. Ask if they or any of their regulars have any events coming up? Maybe some of the guys get together at <insert name here>'s house every Friday night for a game of cards and a few smokes. Take the plunge man and go! If you have some other hobbys revisit them and do the same thing. Find somewhere local and go!!!!!

As great as the internet is we are still people and we haven't evolved to the point yet that we don't need in person interaction to be happy.

You're an embarrassment to the board. A complete and utter failure. Just give up and go buy yourself some Virginia Slims, Betty.

Yeah, right. You and me both, and probably half the people who post here...

I'm right there with ya, buddy. I've only been smoking for about a year. I know two people who enjoy cigars (and I get together with them maybe once a month) and I have, at most, one cigar a week. It has to be outside and I have to "de-skunk" afterward because my wife hates the smell of it.

But I do it anyway, because I love it. I may not be a cigar guru, I may not always agree with popular opinion on what's good and what's not, and half the time I don't know my ACID from a hole in the ground. So what?

Dude, don't even worry about it. I know next to nothing as well compared to many on here. It's a hobby to me where I'm always learning and looking up new stuff, but I can be kinda slow sometimes so it takes me reading things a few times to really pick up on it all.

I don't really know anyone else around here that smokes either. My roommate doesn't smoke and is kinda weird to hang out with anyway. My other friends will smoke if they're over at my place and I'm smoking, but they don't appreciate it the same way I do. I met a couple guys at a B&M a couple weeks ago, but things are hectic so I don't always have a chance to get out there.

I usually smoke at home and I really enjoy the social aspect of BOTL. I can jump on chat and chill for a few hours while I smoke and watch a movie or TV or something. Allows me to interact with other people who are smoking even if I'm not getting out to a B&M.

This is an awesome community of great people. Remember though, communities go through changes and usually come full circle. All these "airing of grievances" threads are part of how these things work. Eventually it'll all be in the past (until it comes around again of course... lol). I've seen it happen on multiple forums and similar drama occurs outside the internet too, of course.

So just relax, brother. Find some time to spend with yourself and smoke. Post on the board, even in the regular discussion threads. That's what they're there for, we can't always be talking about smoking and cigars. It's a cigar forum, but it's a community too that shares other mutual interests. Jump in chat too and just enjoy yourself.

Pete said it's all about the cigar, but don't forget about the brotherhood too. So pull up a chair, grab a smoke, and hang out. :)

Thanks for the kind words guys. Reading it back, I think my post came off a bit more self-loathing than intended. I was just in a pretty bad mood last night. My original intention with this thread was to air some of my embarrassing lack of knowledge just to get it off my chest and give y'all a better understanding of where I'm coming from. Don't worry guys, I haven't "decided to sell all my cigars and every cigar-related item I have" or anything. Just venting a bit.

I must have missed them. Either that or you're just being way too hard on yourself. No worries brother.

We are brothers of the same cut. I don't "have" the ability to describe flavors and all the little intracacies nor can I look at a cigar and tell you the make and model of a cigar. I know what I like, I like the BOTL/SOTL on here and that I am satisfied with, so be it.

From my dealings and PM's with you bro, you are an asset to this community. Honor and integrity to me, go way further than post count and contribution. Oh yeah, I saw what you did there, lol.

wow the mind is a terrible place. I also don't have much to offer but enjoy the polictical debates at times on the board. They can get quite hot at times but I strongly beleive that after the discussion I could meet with anyone and enjoy smoking a cigar with.
Sometimes I have nothing to say but start trouble and see who picks up on it. BOTL is a place to come to enjoy the company, talk about whatever including cigars and make cyber friends. It was great when I was able to put a name and a face together at a meet up or party. Keep coming my friend. Learn what you can but most of all enjoy yourself.

BTW where are the JOBS!!!
