enjoyed reading what someone feels are the "letdowns" out there right now. posted on the foh forum.....

I often get asked what are my favourite "Top 10" cigars right now (current production and I will cover that in a different thread) but rarely do I get asked the "Worst Top 10" cigars/Shame File.

It is fortunate to be in a position to smoke current stock month to month from different boxes and codes. it does give you an insight that few can really have. From the list below you will get some exceptional boxes but in general they have been disappointing. These are cigars that are generally readilly available.

10. Partagas Presidente

They just can't get construction right. There can be no other reason except for the fact that for the price point they just don't care. It is a Figurado. They need to apply better rollers to the construction. When you get a Hayleys comet box which is of mainly perfect construction they are decent cigars but I have never had an exceptional one.

9. Romeo y Julieta Churchill

What in Gods name are they doing to this cigar. A lot of love has gone out of R&J since the factory was progressively shut down in 04/05. I find this one of the toughest cigars to get anything near HQ and PSP quality. We are talking around 5% at this level, well below the main.

8. Trinidad Fundadores

There has been a slight recovery and the right box is truly magnificent. However do I really need to go through 10 boxes to pull a great one? Underfilling still a concern although predominantly 07/08 boxes. This should be a great cigar every bloody time.

7. Trinidad Robusto Extra

The shift to Pinar Del Rio from El Laguito in 05 was no help to the Robusto Extra or the Fundadores. What confuses the hell out of me is how the Robusto "T" can be such a great cigar and yet the Robusto Extra remains to be so consistently wed to a paper flavour profile. There are exceptions but the blender here on most days is clueless.

6. Partagas Salomones

What a travesty. The box failure rate on these is a joke. Underilled/overfilled. When you get a great one it is a sublime cigar but one shouldn't have to work this hard to do so.

5. Cohiba Siglo VI

Probably the biggest victim of overproduction in Cuba today. I can generally find great boxes due to the amount of stock to choose from but the deterioration in wrappers over the past two years for this cigar is a cause for concern. When they get the right seco in the blend it is magic (honey nuances/cream/citrus edge) but the cigar is currently being produced from so many different factories that consistency in blend is a crapshoot.

4. Romeo y Julieta Short Churchill

They nailed this cigar at release. It has gone downhill ever since. Initially they had those beautiful thin and tensile rwd brown wrappers and an at cold aroma of sweet cherry tobacco. You still ocassionally see them but rare. Box after box is inspid.

3. Vegas Robaina Famosos

I am a lover of the Famoso. 06/07 and periods of 08 I had rich chocolate sticks. This last 10 months has seen a collapse in overall quality that I didn't think was possible to achieve. Someone at HSA pull a stick to the factories producing them.

2. Sancho Panza (Any).

If you don't want to produce them DON'T! Some of the rubbish coming out in the Belicoso, Non Plus etc is plain embarrassing.

1. Montecristo Open

I force myself to smoke the range once a quarter just to see if they are improving. Yes, I have had solid 88 point cigars. I have never had anything higher and the majority are between 82-84 points. The wrappers are generally fine and far more consistent than any other cigar. However, the blend is simply insipid with a complete lack of complexity/evolution or depth. It is the most "un-Cuban" of any cigar being produced in Cuba today.

Yup...I saw this post as well, and thought an interesting read.

Only one I can personally comment on is the Sig VI. All the ones I'd smoked, which was only a few....were not near as good IMO as the CoRo I had recently. I know that the Sig line was made to be a tad milder than the regular, but I was expecting more from the Sig VI. I am still curious to try the IV at some point soon though.

I just saw this list as well, of course it was 2 days after I bought a box of '10 Famosos. I think I'll bury them in the back of the cooler for a few years and check on them later...

I loved the Sig I had, but I agree with the Monte Open 100%, that cigar was horrible. I've had more enjoyment from a 5 Vegas Gold

I agree with the Famosos for sure. Makes me wonder what kind (or country) of tobacco they are putting in them now.

Some that i never have cared for are the Mag 46 and 50s. I'm also not a big Punch guy either.

I have a box of party salamones that are smoking well. However I would agree that they are average at best.

I've always wondered what to watch out for and this is highly informative. Perhaps we should work on compiling such a list for BOTL?

This whole issue of inconsistency is the biggest problem for the future of Cuban cigars. And, for me personally, this is why when I am in the mood for a cigar that I KNOW will not disappoint me, I can't grab anything from that island. There are so many non-Cuban cigars that (although very different) are consistently excellent.

If I were made of money I could buy box after box to get some good ones ... but I'm not, and these things aren't cheap. But even more precious to me these days is time--and when I finally get time to sit down for a cigar only to encounter a "bad stick," it just puts me off the whole island. Maybe when I'm older and retired and am smoking 5 cigars a day, I'll be able to just shrug off the bad ones, but not now.

Can't agree on the RyJ Short Churchill. Perhaps my luck has been good (I doubt that!!), but I have consistently got a good smoke when having these. Even my girlfriend who doesn't smoke cigars says that is the only one she will ight up. But that is part of the fun of cigars, the discourse about what is good and what isn't to different people.

My big disappointment was a Punch Punch I had while in Cuba recently. It just fell flat. I thought it might be a humidity problem, but the cigar felt good, little spungy, but not too bad. Definitely not dry. But the smoke just tasted like smoke. No richness or flavour to the stick. Granted, that was my first and only Punch Punch, so perhaps it was a one of. I'd be willing to give it another try, but it had better be good, or I'm breaking up with Punch.

I've noticed that LE Cubans, or the super premium (BHK), are great quality. I've been getting some of the best smokes of my life out of the ones over the last year and a bit. But the production quality has been a bit lacking. I wonder if the Cubans are putting too much emphasis on "speacial" cigars and forgetting about the everyday smokes. Just a thought.

Any list that is compiled will be completely subjective....ask 100 guys to make a list, there will be 100 different lists. Sure, there will be some commonality, but there will also be much dissention. Better off to decide for yourself, or compare notes with friends that you know have a similar palette.

For example, from the list quoted, I have had no construction issues with Partagas Presidentes for the last 6-7 years, think the Siglo VIs have improved in consistency since '08, and have a couple other "issues" with the list. Yet I respect Rob and his opinions a lot, love his reviews, etc....it just goes to show the subjectivity of the whole matter, as far as I am concerned.

You also have to remember that this is a guy that will spend a week at the warehouse picking his stock... when you go through that many boxes, you can come up with these kinds of generalizations.

Interesting read... I personally have never had any issues with the Trins that I have bought, but I've been lucky with 3-4 years of age on them at least.

Completely agree on the MC Open... bluagh.

Not a big lover of the sig vi. But I've had quite a few and though I don't agree with the flavor profile, the consistency has always been there.

Thanks for the list though..

Just to clarify, the writer wasn't saying that these are "The 10 Worst Cuban Cigars." He's saying that these are the 10 most disappointing cigars in the last year or two, and those years specifically. He lists these 10 because they have all BEEN great cigars in the past, he simply thinks the quality has (by and large) gone down in the last couple years to the point of being a big concern for him (as someone who sells these for a living).

I guess I have been lucky with the 3 boxes I have had of the Partagas Salamones, keep in mind....only level = the best rollers are allowed to make them.

Regarding to the Fundadores, I agree, you should get 5 bad cigars at that price range.

Siglo VI smoked to little from 2005 and up to be able to make that call but the reason I smoked so little is the fact I think they are not worth the money, But if you get one from 2004...man...thats a cigar.

Monte open.....I threw it after a while, the people who allowed this cigar to have the monte band on them should jump of a cliff.

Thanks Bob for posting this. I am still fairly new to CC's about 8mo's in and enjoy info like this.
I can't speak for older cc's because I haven't had any old ones that were listed so mine have been 08-10. So there's no way I could have an opinion on this any way. Out of the one listed I find it interesting to see Cohiba and RyJ in the mix...thoes are my Fav!
Again thanks for the info!

Well said njstone. Sure a top-shelf or a well aged excellent cuban can be a very fine cigar even the premiums are not as consistent as Padron 64's and 26's, (the regular padron line too!), most anything from Tatuaje etc.
Having said that, when a cc is great it is spectacular.
If you define disappointing as experience relative to expectation the hands down winner is the Cohiba Lancero. Monte Open tried to be worse bad couldn't even manage to be the #1 worst!
