Hi there,

For many years, I've been eyeing one of the display towers in our drawing room for storage / display of cigars. It's currently purely a piece of furniture, and a damn beautiful one at that. (I'll post photographs later on in the when I get home.)

Just to give you a rough idea, it's about 7.5' tall x 2' w x 2' deep, made of solid rosewood. The bottom third is shelf-less closet, with a wooden panel door. The top two-thirds is arranged in 3-4 glass shelves with a glass paneled door with a wooden frame.

In both sections, the innards are lined with plywood.

This is an old piece, so there is no longer any smell of glue or other unpleasant things like that.

I'm wondering what I would have to do to make the seal good enough to dump an accumonitor system in there and keep my cigars in the top section of the tower.

I wouldn't want to change it too much (i.e. line the insides with cedar etc) cause my wife would have my head!

Anyway, I know it's difficult visualizing the entire unit without a picture, but if anything comes to mind until then, I'm all ears.

Thanks for the help...

you'll need to line the interior and check the seal on the door panels other than that should be fine... you NEED to line it else the plywood will grow mold/fungus.

Spanish Cedar is really what you would need to use. It can be had, I'm sure some of the brothers on here with more knowledge....Oh, you are in Pakistan, I just noted that. I know it can be had online, but I don't know what kind of shipping difficulties you might run into...

Yeah... that's the problem. I'm not sure if it's available here or not, cause I don't know what it's called in the local language.

What would be a good substitute? Not that I would know what those would be called either... but it's certainly worth a shot.

Fozzie, try looking for Cedrela odorata. That is the actual genus/species of the tree...perhaps it is sold under that name. Just a thought.

I know some mahoganies can be substituted for spanish cedar. Spanish cedar is actually a mahogany anyways. Just from my little bit of experience you really don’t want the plywood in there. It can swell, warp, split, mold, and ruin your cigars. On the other hand you truly do not need to use spanish cedar to make a humidor. As long as it regulates the humidity and has a good seal anything can be a humidor.

Cedrela odorata is another name for spanish cedar. I hope that helps.

Also this link might help:

Pulling this out of my butt now but:

Boys,

Thanks for the input...

Seems mahogany it's gotta be. Gonna look around a bit and get back.

Meantime, here are some pics to give you an idea. It's a big unit, and I realized that the gap between the door and unit is pretty big, as you can see in one of the pics.

I think that the Avallo would be perfect in there.

Comments?

Did one about three times that size. Sealed all the seams with silicon. Let it dry and air well. Lined it with spanish cedar using the floating method. Built a lip around the door. Used simple foam for the seal. Very forgiving and easy to use. Built lat shelves for air flow. Accumonitor for humidity. Works great. Indy rob built one a while back and passed on the lining. He just sealed it and fired it up.

Pictures...this post is useless without pictures.

I don't see why you couldn't make that at work. Seal up the seams as Chuck says, get yourself a foam or rubber door seal for the door, line with spanish cedar or mahagony, good to go.

That would make a beautiful humidor! Getting it (nearly) airtight will be the trickiest part, but certainly not impossible. Add a tray of gel beads (or kitty litter) and a small fan or two... And you really wouldn't have to line it completely with Spanish cedar (or mahogany), just make sure the existing wood is well-sealed and make your shelves out of cedar (or mahogany).

Please keep us posted - I have a feeling this will turn out great.
