I got bit by another bug

Airguns.

I have slipped and am sliding down the slope. When I joined this forum, I had no idea how deep the Cigar World went. Now I have a Cabinet humidor with roughly 250-300 sticks in it. I am on my 1st gun, but already have a new trigger and scope on the way and am planning to do several other mods in time. The recoil on this gun killed the first scope which was not rated to withstand the double/reverse recoil of a Springer air gun. Anyway, while I am waiting for the new stuff to get here, I am going to strip the factory finish from the stock (pumpkin colored). I bought the stripper I am going to use, and will do the required sanding and wood prep. My question come from, once I get it raw. What do I do from there? Or rather what stain and finish should I use? I am considering just a hand rubbed tung oil finish with no stain at all. But I am seeing that is it going to be really light in color, and maybe a deeper tone would be nice. I am not sure how fancy the grain is below the current stain, so a dark color might help it pop out a bit. Any way what would you wood guys do to a piece of raw White Ash to make it look sweet on a gun stock?

Here is a pic of the factory finish and color.

I stained my stairway banisters, and the stain was actually labeled as Gunstock. Looks amazing. I think the wood is oak, it was very white, a lot lighter then that stock. Looks great.

choose a stain color, rub it on with a rag, let it dry overnight.
i think a shellac finish with or without a french polish would be suiting.
you can rag on the shellac too. and being alcohol based, it dries in under 20 min for another coat.i would use dewaxed shellac (AKA sanding sealer)
there are plenty of vid's on youtube for all that.

Well that stock has a stain on it. I plan to remove that color. This is a picture of a guy who did the same.

Here is his finished product. I'm not sure if I want mine darker than that.

OR like this same stock, different gun

I would go Walnut stain and linseed oil.
That was my thoughts right off the bat. My questions now are regaRDING THE USE OF STAIN AND OIL. So I can stain what ever color I want, and then finish it with a hand rubbed oil, usinf some "00" steel wool ater the first couple of coats right?

I think the tung oil would be sweet! It would definately pop. You could inlay an exotic wood if you wanted a little dept. Cool project, I never thought about redoing my gun stocks, but I baby them so they still look practically new. Wives come and go but my rifles stay with me through thick and thin lol.

Yes...steel wool the first two coats lightly, use a soft clean rag to apply the stain and then use your fingers to apply the oil.

oK, it's getting stripped tonight. HOPEFULLY FULLY STRIPPED AND READY FOR STAIN BY sUNDAY. I'll post before and after pics for you guys. THanks for the suggestions. I guess really any color I choose will be better than the factory color.

oops forgot to take pics of the sanded stock, but i got it down very nicely. I have 5 coats of dark walnut stain on it. I got scared of a raw wood finish and after staining it, I liked the grain so I wated to see it, and decided against black. Time for some poly urethane. A new coat each night this week. and we should be done. I'll be sure to show pics when I'm done.

I also like the look of linseed oil, but a word of caution for anyone who hasn't worked with linseed oil before: the oil-soaked rags can spontaneously combust. I soak the used rags in water and then seal them in ziplock bags before disposing of them.

Dave...Bring it to the beach herf (if it's legal, of course) and we can shoot cans and stuff.
....Eventually we'll get good enough to cut through the straps on bikinis :)

I thought about just using linseed oil, but I heard it is REALLY heavy. Since it's on a gun, weight is a concern.

And NO clint, we are in laguna beach and it is an extremely liberal group. I can not imagine a pellet gun shooting 950 feet per second is legal there.
