New humidor options?

I was to hoping to get some input on desktop humidor options. I am currently using a 50ct humidor and am living cigar to cigar so to speak and it never seemed that I will ever reach capacity. After a fantastic Easter weekend which included 2 forays across the border to 2 separate B&M's and placing orders with 2 great BOTL'ers, it would seem after the dust settles and the sticks start rolling in I'll be at capacity and will have to play tetris with my sticks to ensure they fit.

So now the search begins for a larger humidor option. I am looking for a large desktop that holds 300+ cigars. Eventually I'd like to acquire a monolith but I don't think I've reached that level yet. Done quick searches online and I like the look of the 400-500 footlocker humi but do not like the traditional wood finish if other options exist. If this humi came in a black lacquer finish I'd order in a heartbeat.

Could someone point me in the right direction? What brands of humi's are recommended? Sites? If a black lacquer footlocker humi exists?!?

Thanks in advance for your input and sorry for being long winded.

Shaun

Honestly, keep your 50 ct for show, and get yourself an igloodor for $50 tops. You'll be surprised how quick it will fill up, and its such low maintenance.

I hunted for a larger humidor for awhile to upgrade from my desktop, and almost pulled the trigger on a couple large ones that would have cost me a few hundred. Glad I didn't cause I would have already outgrown them, and been in the market for another.

Igloodor would probably be the way to go unless you absolutely don't like the way they look. There are several places on the web that'll show you how to put one together if you just Google Igloodor or coolidor.

Thanks for the input so far. Been reading up on the igloodor/coolidor option. One question.....do they come in a black lacquer finish? :dunno:

LOL!

Exterior storage space will/may eventually become a factor as I have recently sold my house and will be moving into a condo downtown Toronto for a small stint before moving my family back to Montreal and buying a house there. I'll weigh my options and even hold off if necessary. I like form factor though.

Coolidor might even be a better option for you then. No sense in moving around a wood humidor, and risk it getting all chipped up, or damaged. Before I bought a big one from walmart, I just used a standard 12 can pack sized cooler, till it got filled.

Just a bit of food for thought. I am currently using a larger mini-fridge. It holds upwards of 400 sticks and if you eventually get a larger one, you can use the fridge for what it was meant for. I know people here talk about wine coolers, but they are not meant to be a refrigerator for normal stuff, and I know that the mini fridge was actually handy for me a long time ago. I just leave it unplugged and keep a lot of boxes in there to maintain the humidity. It seems to work really well.

Perfect for storing box's of all sizes and I love the seal it has. So a nice humi for the price and you can get them on C-bid too. (Not the Black finish though)
Also I have this cabinet and love it...

one thing you need to know is black attracts heat and a black laquered humi will really show the dust.
Okay that was two things....My .02 cents!

Thanks for all the input brothers. TBH I've been eyeing the footlocker humi on cheaphumidor but one day I saw the s.t. Dupont black lacquer humi and was blown away. Then I was brought back to reality as it's only a 100ct but I think even more so when I saw the $2000+ pricetag!

I like the coolidor option but don't like the form factor (or lack thereof).
I like the footlocker option but not crazy about the standard finish.

To each their own I suppose.

You guys also got the mice in my head running faster and faster in the wheels in my head and got me thinking long term project custom built humi.

Does anyone know if painting the exterior of a humi will seriously damage its capabilities to hold RH and remain airtight? Both from spraying or by getting it done professionally?

Considering that a lot of the humidors out there are already painted with varnish, poly, or some other sealant, I'm not sure I can see how one more layer would change anything.

Ed from Waxing Moon Wood can also build you whatever size desktop/footlocker you would want in any number of woods including Madagascar Ebony, which, with the right accents and splines, could look killer and possibly give you the look it sounds like you might be after.
