Are there ways to get ahold of local cigars? Such as tobacco filler and wrapper grown locally and rolled by a hobbyist or something. I can imagine it's probably not "as good" as the stuff grown on plantations down south that have had years of history to back them up, but I would imagine there's something pleasant about smoking something from your area.

I don't even know if this idea exists or not, but I would think it's similar to wine. The best stuff is over in Europe but wine from the vineyard down the road is mighty tasty!

I have no idea. Some shops roll their own cigars, so I'd imagine some might use local tobacco. I'd ask at a few shops around Charlotte, they will probably be able to give you a better answer than anyone here.

I may have to do that. I haven't spent much time at my local B&M because, honestly, the prices are just so much better online.

There is a place called the Tinder Box just a few blocks over from me, I'll have to start making that my hangout :)

From your neck of the woods...

According to the website they grow, cure, and roll their own. I think L8A did a review on one of their cigars a little while back :dunno:.

Hey that's awesome! I'll have to see about ordering some. Shoot, Asheville is just up the road. Maybe I can stop by for a visit and hit up the JR Cigar warehouse along the way

So then this is something that goes on? Would it be as common as local wine and stuff like that? I live in Charlotte, NC so I would imagine there is plenty of tobacco grown...
It does, but who knows in what capacity.

There is a guy near me who rolls his own sticks, and I've smoked one. However, I didn't care for it since he ages his wrappers in old bourbon barrels and I found the taste a bit off.

My local B/M has a roller that their store keeps on the books (he's from the DR). Between the 5 stores they keep him busy w/ 3-4 events a month where he is in hand rolling sticks.

I usually keep a few in my box. They're not bad if you get one fresh from him, but if it's been on the table for an hour or so its starting to dry out and not recommended. Thats why I buy them and let them age a bit. Then all is good.

I would only bother if I lived in an area where tobacco was commercially grown. I know a few guys who tried to grow and roll their own even though they lived in places like New Jersey and Northern Cali, results were reported to be awful.

We have a local shop that rolls their own product, the owner is from the DR, and uses DR, Nic and Honduran leaves. He rolls some very good cigars, surprisingly good.

On a related subject, there is a company in Kentucky called Black Patch Cigars who uses Kentucky ligero along with tobacco from other countries. Those, to me, are tremendously good. Not all local tobacco but the blend is perfect. Kentucky grows some fine tobacco.

I would be interested in growing my own pipe tobacco someday though, that might be fun....not sure it would be much good though.

I have never taste local cigars. Cigars are either rolled by hand, or manufactured by machines. I think rolled by hand cigars are also know as local cigars. I read some where that hand rolled cigars are more expensive than those produced by machines, there are many inexpensive hand rolled cigars with prices of $1.00 or less.

One of the B&M's I frequent (Davidus cigars) has a house brand called Isabella that I love.
