Unfortunately I was a victim of credit card fraud last month. It was a card that I keep a zero balance on and it came through with charges from out in Michigan :hanghead:

Luckily BB&T cut off the card immediately so whoever it was was capped out at $200. I can't imagine what they would've done if my bank hadn't reacted so quickly even without notifying me. The bank is going to take care of everything but I was curious if there is any action I can take against the criminal. Obviously it's not much money and I don't want to just waste my time, but I don't mind pursuing the issue if there's a chance of anything.

not a whole lot for that, it would be up to the CC company or police to pursue criminal charges. I would keep an eye on your credit report and make sure they didn't get a hold of any other info or take out any additional credit in your name.

Almost impossible to get the pricks, I had a friend who had someone steal his card from the club he works out at, they got cash in Atlantic city around $2500 they had video and everything and would not pursue them. go figure it's easier to write it off and increase our rates to cover their loss's. frustrating!

Having worked in the credit card industry I can tell you a couple of things:

1. Once you report fraud and the issuing bank takes the charges off, it is no longer considered fraud committed against you, it is against the bank.

2. Due to #1, you have no way to press charges or take any actions against the person responsible. It is the banks decision to pursue any and all legal action against the person who committed the crime. They won't even share with you info in regards to who did it.

As you have already stated, you are very lucky they caught it when they did. I have seen many cards with fraud balances over $250k. Crazy stuff.

even when you have it on video, how do you ever ID the pricks.

Well the longer version is he was in contact with a Detective he knew, They had his info the bank had his info the Bank as stated above has to pursue, even with the police pressing they get no where without the banks help. the they had video was more of a nail in the coffin if the chicken shit banks had any balls or gave a shit, and it went to court.

Many of these guy's are known, in our mall the cameras do not have the resolution the casinos do, the way the cops get them is they are known by them. same as car license numbers they may not read them but they may very well know the car and driver!

Fortunately, most CC companies and banks are getting pretty good at notifying people of unusual transactions occurring. I know that's not even fool proof but it's nice to see they are trying.

We just went on vacation to Orlando and used our bank debit card for all of our purchases. After a day they shut down the card and sent an email to my phone to confirm purchases then they immediately released the card back into service. Wasn't a headache at all. They clearly thought something was fishy with my card since most of my purchases are here in Ohio then all of a sudden a bunch of money was being spent in Orlando.

Great point I have also had a few phone calls asking if I made certain purchases, I actually appreciate that! I always forget the positive stuff when I am posting about the negative. great point!

That's pretty good info, I didn't realize it worked that way but it makes a lot of sense. As much as it sucks, I am extremely happy it was only $200. Good to see the banks making a strong effort to fight such a nasty and annoying problem

When I go on a trip I let my cc company know and for how long.

The few times I've given my cc the heads up I'm going to the states they cancel my card after the first time I fill up on gas. Without fail. I've since stopped and it's never happened to me again. go figure

Fraud Investigators are a-holes! Right JNT?? And there is no real way I can see you going after the bad guys. Because, really in the end it was the CC that is out the money, not you. Unless they affect your credit somehow, not your lose. And time doesn't count as being "lost" in court, generally.

Oh man do I know how you feel. Was a victim of fraud myself earlier this year (Apparently it is very frequent around New Years so watch out).

All I could do was :
1. Report it and put a hold on the account
2. Close out that account
3. Start a new account

It sucks...sorry to hear that you had to go through it
