Hello!

Still being a noob, I figured a lot of the old-timers here would know several good sticks that every beginner should try. I have a half-empty humidor and I'd prefer to have the knowledge of more experienced smokers fill it up rather than go blind and, with my luck, pick up all the crap ones.

Many Thanks.

Some Cigars that have really made me go WOW in my 5 months of smoking are:

Illusione ~hl~ maduro
LFD double ligero Chisel
MOW Puro Authentico (after sitting 2 months)
La Traviata robusto
Padron 1964 nat monarca

And a safe bet is to pick up anything blended by DPG!

I say anything and everything. Start grabbing those online sampler packs and try as much as you can. If you don't like a stick - no worries, you haven't committed to a box and you have stuff to trade.

Right now I am really into:
Viaje
illusione
Tatuaje
Liga Privada

Perdomo Lot 23
Fuente Hemingways
Some cigars in lancero size after trying one with a thicker ring gauge
Ashton VSGs (if you like full bodied)
Oliva smokes

Most of them are on the more budget conscious side. The Hemingways are 7-8 and the Ashtons are all around 10 and up. There are other fuentes that are cheaper and the Oliva smokes range from 4/5 up to 10. Most everyone will be telling you Tatuaje, Illusione, Liga Privada and the like. They're all great smokes but I wouldn't jump right into a $10-$13 smokes. Plus the often mentioned are all the rage on this site. I smoke em but they're not the end all be all. Smoke around and see what you like/ask the B&M employees to help if at all think they know what they're talking about.

Lots of great cigars out there, don't be afraid to look at some of the "old standard" brands. Some I can think of off top of my head. Punch (NC) Pita Maduro, Excaliber Epicure Maduro, La Gloria Cubana (NC) regular line Corona Gorda & Wavell, Padron regular line, Partagas (NC) Black Label Magnifico. Thats one of the great thing about cigars trying diffrent ones looking for something special.

samplers are your friend. depends on what you like. if you are just starting out, fuente is hard to beat for flavor and consistency. padron would fall into that category as well. in addition, you can get sticks in almost all price ranges from those two brands. if your budget allows, and you want a little more kick, the tats and lp's are always solid. just remember taste is subjective. just because someone else likes doesn't mean you will and vice versa. hopefully you have a b&m close by that you can spend some time looking through and someone there who is knowledgable and can point you in the right direction.

I'd say go the brand sampler route. Most of the major online sites have good deals on Arturo Fuente, Camacho, Pinar del Rio, Don Pepin Garcia, La Aurora, CAO, Padron, and so many more brand samplers. They give you a wide variety of different wrappers and blends so you can see what you like and dislike. Most important of all, just sit back and relax or shoot the breeze with some buddies. That's really what it's all about anyway. And don't get caught up in all the hype.

How about a Macanudo, yeah Im sure there are lots of us that probably dont smoke them anymore but its a classic that everyone should try at least once.

I also had a Cru Royal the other day that was pretty darn good. it did have about 5 months of age on it, dont know if that had anything to do with it or not.

This is tough cause everyone has different tastes, that being said for a noob, (someone just starting out) I'd recommend

Padron x000 series
Perdomo Lot 23
Arturo Fuente Hemmingway
Cohiba (NC) with some age
DPG black or blue line

Check the "Cigar Deals" thread often. Good way to pick up samplers of good sticks without breaking the bank. Or, if you haven't already, look for the "Noob Sampler" thread and get on the list. Gotta break that Trader Rating cherry somehow.

I'd lead you toward a few easy to find, affordable sticks that will allow you to try your way around the flavor spectrum that you're likely to get from cigars.

Avo Classic Tubo- Light-bodied. Notes of wood/cedar. Dry mouthfeel. Mild strength.

Arturo Fuente Flor Fina 8-5-8 Natural- Medium-bodied. Peppery spiciness. Rich mouthfeel. Medium Strength.

Partagas Black Label- Full-bodied. Rich dark flavors. Moderate peppery. Heavy mouthfeel. Medium/Full Strength.

Oliva Serie V- Medium-Bodied. Sharp/Acrid (ligero) flavors. Spicy (peppery early on, then more of a baking spice character as the flavors develop). Lingering "tanginess" on the palate. Medium/Full Strength.

After that, I'd smoke a couple of GRAS (generally regarded as superb) sticks like the Padron Anniversario lines, Drew Estate Liga Privadas, Tatuajes, Opus or some of the other "high-end" sticks that I'm sure you'll see talked about on these forums.

Once you've developed a baseline, you'll have a better idea of the characteristics you do/don't like, and it'll be easier for your tobacconist (or anyone else knowledgeable about fine smokeables, for that matter) to make a thoughtful recommendation once you start branching out and trying new things.

Enjoy! And best of luck!

Good list here. People were recommending a lot of higher end cigars that should be tried down the line.

I would say get familiar with some good beginner brands. I still smoke these brands today.

Padron
Oliva
CAO
Don Pepin Garcia

There are a lot of brands out there, start out with some of the major ones, work with the less expensive cigars, and try to build up a taste for cigars.
