Montecristo Grand Edmundo (10) Edicion Limitada 2010 Size: Length: 5 5/6" Ring Gauge: 52 (150mm x 20.64mm)
Type: Cañonazo
Cigars per box: 10

I finely got some time to post this review on this cigar. I smoked it a few weeks back and had another yesterday to celebrate Memorial Day.
This cigar is the perfect size for me and after waiting about 6 months of down time I couldn't wait to smoke another any longer. The feel of this cigar is nice and heavy. It's very well packed and the leaf is typical of the Monte's I have smoked. Very few cosmetic issues at all and the smell of these cigar is sweet in my opinion.

The first third
Cutting the head with my Xikar Xi3 and then toasting the foot, I could smell that typical tabacoo scent of the Monte 2. The draw is perfect and the smoke is nice and creamy off the go. Right away I can taste the nuttyness comming off this and there is no harshness at all. after about a good inch I get what is a sweet coffee note and some cashew. Man, what a way to start off a cigar! I'm praying it doest take any bad turns as I go along.
heading into the second third of this cigar was almost to soon. The burn was crisp and a little uneven but worked itself out in no time.

The second third
The burn has gotten a little funny all of a sudden so I had to touch up with my lighter. Didn't seem to effect it in any way though. This cigar is just amazing me with the creamy smoke and sweet nutty flavors. It hasn't changed much in my opinion but seems to give way to more of that coffee note I picked up in the first third. Lots of smoke and the draw is still perfect.

The final third
As with the second part of this cigar, I feel so relaxed and impressed at how this cigar hits all the notes in a cigar I love. I need to slow down as I just want this cigar to keep burning as long as I can let it. The cashew flavors are really strong now and the sweetness I can actually taste on my tongue.
Coffee is still present and the smoke is incredible.

The nub
I wasn't sure if this cigar would compare as good as the first one I smoked but it was dead on. I tried my best to smoke this cigar into nothing but ash. I really like the way it didn't get to hot at the end which bothers me with some cc's.

Final thought
Just an amazing smoke IMHO. I really, really enjoyed this cigar alot. I would say it's much better than the Monte 2 which I like as well, but this cigar was just so much better with all the flavors. It was a toss up between this cigar and my other fav, Triny Rob Extra, but I really wanted to give this cigar another go and man am I glad I did.
If you haven't tried this cigar and the flavors I discribed are something you enjoy then do yourself a favor and pick a few of these up.
Just a fantastic smoke and I can't wait to have another!
Thanks for your time fellas!!!

great review man, i have wanted to try those for a while. I have read lots of reviews from when they came out that were not flattering, nice to see an opinion from someone who might have closer tastes that I can relate to

great review. Here is one that I wrote on this cigar a few months ago.

2010 Montecristo EL Grand Edmundo
DATE REVIEWED: March 14, 2011
Cigar Date: December 2010

The Montecristo Grand Edmundo is part of the 2010 Edicion Limitada release. Every year, Habanos S.A. releases 3 cigars in unique formats.

2010 is a special year for me as this is the birth year of my son, Jacob. Thanks to a good friend, I was able to buy a lot of these boxes. There were a few reasons that I wanted to do this.

The first is to put aside some boxes to give to Jacob when he is 21. I think it would be pretty cool to be able to smoke a cigar of your birth year. I was thinking when he graduates from college and/or university.

The second is to be able to enjoy one on his birthday (October 19th) every year as well as have some around when I would like to fire one up. The third reason is that I really enjoyed the 2008 Montecristo Sublime. In fact, Montecristo is one of my top 5 cigar marcas in my humidor.

The last reason is that I love the canonazo size. It comes in at 52 ring gauge and 5.9 inches. Just feels right in your hand. A beautiful cigar to behold.

All Edicion Limitada use tobacco that has been aged for 2 years before being rolled. I guess that this is from the 2008 tobacco crop. 2008 has been a spectacular year for Habanos and I am hoping that these follow suit.

Well, enough about that. Let’s get onto the review.

Like I said earlier, the canonazo vitola is my favorite size. The presentation on this cigar is fabulous. The montecristo label and the 2010 Edicion Limitada labeling makes the cigar look so elegant. The embossed montecristo labeling is a nice added touch.

The color on this cigar is a nice hue of brown. Not as dark as the 2008 Montecristo Sublime. It is slightly darker than a traditional Montecristo. The triple cap is expertly applied. Can’t wait to fire this up.

I paired this a Montaudon Grand Cru Rose Brut Champagne. There was a great discussion on pairing cigars with champagne. I was surprised that not many people have done this over at that site. Champagne and cigars are one of my favorite combinations. A friend of mine had a similar epiphany with Riesling wines. The champagne not only brings out the flavors of the cigar but also cleanses your palate. A nice way to spend an afternoon.

A quick cut, using my trusty Palio, of the triple cap and we are ready to go.

A quick pre lit draw brings hints of chocolate, earthiness, a hint of sweetness (honey?) and a touch of nicotine. Firing this up was very easy. The draw was fairly effortless. Just a hint of resistance, which I actually like about Cuban cigars.

The ash is a familiar grey. The cigar itself is very well made. No soft spots whatsoever. The burn line is quite even. I wouldn’t say razor sharp though.

Billows of smoke are emanating from the cigar. Flavors are very pronounced from the get go. Lots of chocolate, honey, a hint of spice with a touch of floral notes. Some earthy characteristics as well. The typical Montecristo flavors on steroids. Very surprised that there in no pronounced overtones of nicotine, seeing that this is cigar was rolled a year ago. Must be the use of aged tobacco.

The first third is very balanced. Nothing overpowering. All the flavors are in harmony. Very enjoyable. Hints of almond and cedar starting to creep in. The flavors really linger in your mouth after a couple of draws.

The only downside so far is the burn. Getting a little uneven right now. The ash dropped off after the first inch. Will have to do a quick touch up.

The second third brings a blast of cedar and cocoa. The almond characteristic is much more pronounced. Nuttiness and earthiness is the best way to describe it. Still billowing out a ton of smoke. Some leather notes are starting to take form. The famous Cuban ‘twang’ is really coming out as well.

The champagne is matching this well. The slight sweetness of the Montoudon Rose amplifies the flavors of the cigar.

As the cigar progresses, it seems to have mellowed out a bit. A return to sweetness, chocolate and creaminess. The leather and cedar notes seemed to have died down. There are still some hints of almond though. A nice change of pace. The burn line is now sharp and the ash is holding on strong. Looks like the cigar has found its sweet spot.

Final third, flavor bomb. The cedar, leather and honey come back in spades. This cigar is keeping me guessing. Don’t’ know what to expect and I like it. The cigar is starting to flex its muscles. Billows of smoke continue to emanate from the cigar.

Final impressions: The cigar is the real deal. Ever evolving flavors to keep you on your toes. Very enjoyable smoke. Glad that I have a few boxes of these to enjoy over the years. Has all the characteristics that you look for in a fine cigar. I think that this will age very nicely.
