Who ever wrote that piece needs to go back to cigar school imo.
Pic 2 is the start of mold not plume. (the one with the 3 cigar heads)
80% or less and your fine according to the author???? You've got to be kidding me!
My general rule:
Most of your cigars (nor mine) will ever see plume unless your a decade cigar collector. Even at that age most will never see plume. Plume doesn't always guarantee a orgasmic experience while smoking. And plume almost always shows up OVER THE WHOLE cigar not in tiny blotches.

In the photo with the three heads, only the one on the far left looks like it has "plume" while the other two are very obviously mold. Justin is spot on in my experience, and what I have learned from others... It takes the planets aligning for plume to truly develop. I think a lot of new smokers get too caught up in worrying about it. Get a good humidity system set up, maintain it, and don't worry so much. The odds of either mold or plume happening aren't great, and if you have things set up correctly, then plume should be the only thing you ever see, and if you are lucky enough, then good for you!

plume is crystalized oils from the wrapper. it doesn't resemble mold. its not furry, its not hairy, and its not colored. if your cigars have plume on them, the plume will look like tiny, tiny crystals...like someone dusted the cigar with a layer fine sugar.

Good Lord. This was actually published in a Cigar Magazine? No wonder so many starting out in this hobby come into it with such bad information.

The fuzzy-looking spots on your cigar may actually be a sign that it has been perfectly aged and is one to be treasured, not feared!
Cigar mold, on the other hand, always indicates damage to the cigar...
If you do find mold on a cigar, dispose of it immediately.
All of the above false, of course, with the exception that with the last statement if you add in "the foot of" between "mold on" and "a cigar" I would then agree with that statement.

And yeah, to put that picture up, where the two cigars on the right are OBVIOUSLY moldy and have the caption at least suggest that all of the cigars have plume is ridiculous.

Being a noob, I've never seen plume (that I know of) and doing a quick Google image search presented a bunch of pictures that just look like mold to me. Does any one have a good picture of what certainly is plume?

Cheers :ccool:

I have been told the old 1964 did not have the extra bands. I called them fakes when I saw it too, but someone said at one time, they could have been real. Who knows?

Yea sorry about that, when I searched it returned 199. Most of which the pictures people linked to were no longer there, was mold or just plain didn't have any. But you inspired me to dig deeper and upon closer inspection did find this thread that does indeed have a picture that everyone agreed was plume.
For anyone else curious about what it really looks like. http://www.botl.org/community/forums/showthread.php?t=4856&highlight=plume

Cheers :ccool:

 I usually use the "advanced search" then select titles only, makes it easier to find things IMO

Yeah basing your opinion on what the salesman in the atlantis cigar bar said is a great idea to use in your article. Wow that is why I do not read smoke anymore.
