Chads brew review- 20110512

Ballast point is known for the radically inventive and awesomely good beers they produce. Another member of their line and no exception to their reputation is the Big Eye IPA. A delicious and surprisingly smooth concoction that embodies everything IPAs are meant to be. With a warm foam and thick Aroma this is one inviting beer. Most of its character is attributed to the american Columbus and centennial hops used in brewing this masterpiece. Smooth refreshing and sweet on the tongue this aquatic masterpiece will not disappoint. With an ABV of 6.8% its just on par with your other IPA giants. With a whopping 15$ price tag per 6 pack this is not for the faint of heart. But for the connoisseur who must have a solid inviting and thought provoking simple beer then look no further.
Described by the maker as the Flagship IPA of Ballast Point Brewing & Spirits.

Have you had their Sculpin IPA? Brisker flavors, than this guy. The Big Eye is maltier, with a heavier mouth feel. I like them both, but prefer the Sculpin. I recommend getting, price permitting.

Have you tried the sea monster?
Yeah Jon!

We drank it last night at the Smoke Mafia smoker here in Kaneohe. Its one of my all time favorites brother! I highly reccomend it! Tamuras is the only one on island who has it as far as ive seen.

The Dried fruit followed by a Mocha dry finish with almost Zero alcohol flavor.

Can you brothers get Barrel-Aged Sea Monster out there on O'ahu? That is the cat's pajamas, but only after Ballast Point's "Victory at Sea."

"Victory at Sea" is an Imperial Stout with Vanilla and Coffee. It is brewed whenever Colby feels like it... so it is hard to tell when and where to get it. Barrel-aged Sea monster is keg-only, I believe. I'll keep my eyes peeled, and see about sending some over to you or I bring it next time I come out to see my mother-in-law in Manoa.

Man, you guys know your beer. I am a mere novice when it comes to all things hops. I know what I like in terms of Double Bock and the various offerings from Samuel Adams.

Based on all I have read here I am going to give an IPA a try. Since I can't head off to Bev Mo I am just hitting up Safeway, are there IPA's I should stay away from?

IPAs to stay away from? Hrm... it is tough to say. What do you like that is hoppy? Just to get a frame of reference, have you had Sierra Nevada Pale Ale?

IPAs are usually good with some real starchy foods. For most they tend to be too bitter and hoppy. Likewise a good starter is sierra Nevada pale ale, big swell IPA, or if you want really heavy go with one of my all time favorites sierra Nevada torpedo IPA. Of you come to Hawaii I can definitely give you the crash course.

I wish I knew as much about cigars but I'm learning.

I love some SN Torpedo Extra IPA. Sadly, it comes in and out of stock around these parts. I'll still pick it up when I see it :inlove:

I have never had the Sierra Nevada so I will pick some up this evening.

Thanks Sean.
