this is becoming unamerican!!!:rolling:

'Unhealthy' corn dogs, chicken nuggets out, sushi in at L.A. schools

The L.A. school board's decision to stop serving flavored milks on campuses is just the beginning.

A menu overhaul is underway that will mean fewer meals that resemble fast food and more vegetarian offerings. Spinach tortellini in butternut squash sauce and California sushi rolls, along with many ethnic foods, are to be added.

Corn dogs, chicken nuggets and other breaded items are out, said Dennis Barrett, food services director.

Megan Bomba, a project coordinator with Occidental College's Urban and Environmental Policy Institute, agreed with the move, saying "the meal needs to be better, not [that] we need to keep chocolate milk" to attract students to the cafeteria, she said.

The menu proposed for fall sounds more appealing and sophisticated, she added.

The district banned sodas on campuses in 2004, starting a trend followed by the state as well as districts across the country. Later that year, the school board passed a motion to ban the sale of junk food during the school day by restricting the calories and fat content in snack foods.

Kids have to eat better, no question...Mine included. They'd eat chicken nuggets every day if offered. If you leave them that option in school, that's all they'll eat. And let's not lie, a lot of this crap is simply bad for you. We're not fat by accident as a culture, it's quick and easy to fry nuggets and call it a meal. Most adults aren't going to change their eating habits, so why not give the kids a fighting chance at expanding their horizons beyond a crappy meal?

Choc Milk...that's a travesty though. :)

The soda and junk food has to go. It's ridiculous how many machines are in my kids schools, they are kids and by nature will not always make the best decisions for themselves. Sushi? Thats pushing it!

Spinach tortellini in butternut squash sauce definitely sounds like something I'd want to eat in a high school cafeteria.:agreesmil:agreesmil:agreesmil My HS could barely make passable pizza.

i have no problems with having healthier foods at school. it's just a shame since THE PARENTS should do their job and not leave it to the schools. and wouldn't sushi and tortellini cost a bit more than corn dogs???

How long till parents are yelling to bring them back because the kid isn't eating lunch cause he/she doesn't like sushi, or tortellini. If schools really want to make healthier luches they'd start by bringing back kitchen staff and stop buying all this frozen nukeable stuff they serve now.

damn, i forgot the liberals reply to everything!!!!
Maybe they can propose blowing something up as part of the plan. That always seems to loosen conservative wallets. :)

Seriously, though, I don't know how much more this is likely to cost. Have you SEEN school lunch grade tortellini?

See, you guys don't live in Socal. I'm not sure I know too many people who don't consider Sushi at least a once per week meal. We go at least once a week for lunch.

Now as far as school lunches go. I let my kids buy maybe once per month. No way I'm letting them eat that shit on a daily basis. My daughters favorite snack in her lunch is the dried seaweed. no kidding a bunch of the girls eat it. 7 yrs old and eating seaweed like it's cool.

california rolls are just crab salad and is not raw fish. while still a part of the sushi group, it's not as much of a risk as the raw stuff that is soooooo goood.

Always packed my kids lunches. The crap they serve in their school cafeterias, even the alleged healthy choices, are mostly steamed or nuked from frozen, sulfate filled crap. I have no problem with the schools attempts to offer healthier lunch but if Mrs. Messiah has her way the day will come when they even check the quality of the food that parents pack for their kids.

The private school we have our son at doesn't even provide lunch for the kids - it's up to the parents to pack for them every day.

Even so, our kids (10 and 3) would both eat sushi for lunch if offered - they love the stuff!

I ate a sausage biscuit for breakfast and pizza and fries for lunch every single day of high school (I was homeschooled prior to that) and I turned out just fine.

Granted, I had athletics practice before and after school every day too. Had I not been so active, I'd prolly be a big Fatty McFatFat...
