I'm ready to ditch satellite tv because we only really watch about 5 channels regularly. I'm thinking of going netflix, or get one of those boxes that will allow you to watch web tv.

We mostly watch local news (I'll need and HD antennae for that) History channel, Discovery, SyFy, BBCA and what ever channel the UFC is on. (son watches it) Is there any web service anyone uses that has shows on these channels?

You'll likely never get the same coverage as regular tv, especially the farther you stray from the big 4 networks.

Roku makes a line of very affordable Internet streaming devices that work quite well and let you consume content from a myriad of services such as Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, Vimeo, Crackle, etc...

Five years ago I used to work in a computer repair shop. People would occasionally come in asking for advice on setting up a web cast TV system. From my knowledge, most of the methods were illegal and very few ever got them to work well at all.

Of course, that was years ago so there are probably more options now days but I have found that if you chase Time Warner's deals you can do alright. I called them last week and got my blazing fast internet (regularly clocks at 15Mbs+), DVR, and basic HD cable package for $80/mo. I rarely sit down and watch TV either, but having a DVR is the saving grace by far

Internet tv is legal as you stream it from sites like HULU, or even the network site itself. There are rumblings of some providers slapping on bandwidth charges but I've not heard any around here.

Good job and good luck with timewarner. I've had such bad problems with them over the years when we built our house I refused to let them run a cable to it, lol!

Oh yeah, I didn't mean to imply you intended to do anything illegal. Just in my experience of shady people, that's all they ever tried to use :hammersma

DirecTV was my initial choice but I had to cancel my contract since my complex doesn't allow installation of a dish. With the exception of the whole NFL package thing, I'm much happier with TWC anyway

For those channels where you watch most of your TV, check out what they have available online currently. Most web TV services do not offer any more shows than the sites offer (at least not that I have seen).

So if you like the offerings online, the internet streaming stuff will do just fine.

Hulu, netflix, amazon, or software like playon.tv which streams through your computer using media center (for internet connected TV's) are all good choices. Use all together, or just a few of them...

I am testing out Netflix on my WII now......

It works fine but all of the shows that we want to see are not able to be seen over internet. They say copy wite laws.

We gave up cable 4 years ago. Never looked back we watch Netflix with the PS3. The only fall back is you are behind on seasons. But there is a bunch of show and movies to watch instantly. I have not tried watching shows with my computer yet. My wife has with great luck.

Went tonight and got a Roku device. It sees my network but won't connect. Online forums say "strip all the security out" then it will connect and you can reconfig the security.

That's just not going to happen. lol.
