Has anyone ever modified their trunk to a humidor or maybe put a coolidor in it? Curious to hear your thoughts

I had a car in high school that on both sides of the spare tire was a "dish" type compartment. They both had rubber drain plugs. They could hold a 5th and a 6pk & ice easily...

But a humidor in a trunk.... hmmm.
A good sized DC to AC convertor would run the coolerdor. But you'd have to find a way to keep it from tipping over.
Then you'd have the fact that itd have to run when the car was off to keep the cigars cool. A day or days without recharging the battery and you could have a dead battery quick. You could run an extra battery, but they are costly and the extra wiring and cylinoid would be costly too... possibly outweighing the benifits.

I've thought about it on more than one occasion. We spend countless hours in our truck, and it would be a LOT easier if I could put the sticks in there and know they were staying prime.

But, it's probably way more work than it's worth. I already run an 1200 watt power inverter in the truck, and that's killed a battery and an alternator. I wouldn't want that on all the time it would need to be, to keep the cigars right. I used one of the portable car coolers years ago, that plug into a cigarette lighter. I accidentally left it on, and ran out to get something from the truck a few hours later. Came out to the plug smoking and melted. I just can't get over that and trust them again.

In the end, I only take my stash with me-when I'll be in the truck with the climate control running. If they will need to sit in there for an extended period, I just take my 3 count with what I need/want for the day. I've had it sit in 100 degree temps, and they sticks were just fine later. Just don't leave your HTF's sitting outside for weeks, and you aren't too much at risk.

And just like that you guys have killed the trunkador dream.

Don't give up so easy! There are solutions! Perhaps a solar panel of some sort? I would assume that if your trunk and coolidor are sufficiently insulated and you don't live in a climate where it regularly gets over 100 degrees, the temp in the trunkador shouldn't rise to unsafe levels...

The only thing I am stuck on is how do you keep them from bouncing around too much when the car is in motion?

If I were to actually do it, I'd take a wine cooler and see where in the system the voltage steps down from 120, and see if I couldn't modify it to run straight on the lower voltage (ie-I'm pretty sure the peliter in mine is 12v). Then run some tests with that hooked up to a battery and see how long till it drains it. You could get a voltage monitor for your car, that disconnects the power to the line to the cooler, once the battery drops below a preset point.

You are still faced with the issue of ambient air temp. I forget the specifics, but I think it's something like "this cooler can only drop the temp 20 degrees max". I know if our RV is 88 inside, my cooler at full tilt is only at 68. So you'd have that same issue in a trunk to overcome.

Maybe... but to install a gyro in a trunk?
Even if you did, a gyro doesn't protect you from the impulse of a "bump from below", which I'd expect to be the most common sorta inertial shift you're gonna see in a vehicle, save turning.

I know, it made me sad, too...

My buddy is a cigar rep and he and I were spit balling ideas the other night. Kinda seems like more trouble than its worth. Maybe just buy a commercial size pelican box or yeti cooler and a bunch of beads

i bet you could get a picture of yourself in Cigar Aficianado (if that's your dream) with a pimped out trunkador. that alone might be worth it. or you could probably be the talk of the town and a big event. hell, maybe event get yourself on the event circuit and you get to show up whereever there's and event.

you gotta think big, way BIG, BIG beyond just having a humidor inside your trunk.

just think of the places that trunkador could take you!!!:cbig:

either way, you'll be a winner in my book

some AMG Mercedes have solar panels on the roof, and that energy is used to extract hot air from the car while it is off. Really great feature. something of the sort can be worked out for cigars.
