First off, great site! Lady is upset I've spent a good portion of the day on "my addiction". LOL.

Have a few questions now that I took the plunge and bought a wine cooler. Picked up a 42 ct Frigidaire cooler.

Picked up the kitty litter, check. Bought my spanish cedar wood--4 pieces of 5"x1/2"x5'. Should be enough but local lumber yard has plenty so I should be ok.

CPU fans are on the way.

Few questions I have so far:
-Trays. I've seen some of the members' trays and the way they have them. Anybody have sliding trays? Went to Lowe's today to look for some sliding rails and they only come in like 4 foot long pieces? Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. In all actuality, I know pulling out the drawer won't be that bad but didn't know if you guys have sliding ones or what.

-Adhesive. Picked up some wood glue, Titebond I believe the manufacturer. Cool? I was thinking of using hot glue like some others suggested but figured this would be fine.

-Wood. Can I put any finishes on the spanish cedar without affecting the cigars? I see some have some other types of wood as the face of the tray, was curious if I could put some varnish or something on it.

Looking forward to this new project!!! Hoping I can get it down this week!

Trays: My trays slide out on the rails that are built into the side of the cooler. They have 3/8" bottom and fit right in where the metal racks once sat in.

Adhesive: I use Titebond 2 or 3 alot. It is "food safe" and resistant to the moisture. I would stay way from the hot glue.... just wouldn't use it around my smokes.

Wood: I sould use a poplar or oak for your fronts. They stain and look better when done. But, make sure they air out a while after you stain them so the "odor" doesn't taint your cooler. Thats what the fronts of mine are; with a SC "liner" behind the stained front.

Where do you get SC at in NOLA?? I have been looking locally (and I work @ Lowe's) with no avail. I would make the hour trip to NOLA for some SC... I got plans in my head needing some SC.

Is this a thermal electric or a compressor type wine cooler? If it is thermal electric then you are good to go if it is compressor you may have issues.

You local lumber yard had spanish cedar? I have always had to go to a specialty hardwood dealer to pick this up. Just make sure it is spanish cedar and not red cedar as they are considerably different.

There are groves for the racks. You can mill/rip down spanish cedar and make trays for this. Most hardwood stores can help you with the thickness you need.

Don't use hot glue.

Putting a finish on the spanish cedar defeats the purpose of the wood.

I hope this helps you a bit with your project.

IMO just get one of the two guys here to make you double (not single) high trays with the stained fronts. Or have them make non stained oak fronts and paint them when you get them. ( have them shipped with the fronts off) after staining and sitting a few days you can just assembly the trays with the finished front with wood glue and a few clamps. I think golfnut still makes stained fronts . Contact him to be sure. U can give him dimensions on your coolers interior and they'll go from there.
Everything else seems to be answered, good luck!

Hmm, my cooler didn't come with any rails. Debating on getting some.

I got the SC actually in Pontchatoula, relatively close at a lumber/hardwood store. Let me know if you plan on going there and I can get you the number. Picked up 4 5"x1/2"x5' for $70. Can't go wrong with that.

After taking a look at a couple of pictures, I see the "liner" of SC and then a seperate front wood. Looks clean, might have to try that!

No hot glue then.

Figured out the stain question, just use a different wood on top of the SC.

This week should be fun!

Thanks.

Your cooler didn't come with any rails? How was it supposed to hold wine bottles? I assume it had racks and the racks usually fit into rails on the side?

I'm thinking based on my limited searches you probably have a condenser model? Would be good to confirm condenser or thermoelectric. If you have a condenser model and you have the ability to return it I would do so in favor of a thermoelectric model. You can work with the condenser version (it's what I have), but it is much more difficult to hold a steady RH and really not worth the hassle when you can use a thermoelectric model.

It came with racks that fit into "slots" on the sides. When I am talking about rails, I am thinking along the lines of a desk drawer with the metals rails on the side?

You've got me nervous that I bought a condenser unit. Damnit. Google is my friend, I do not see the works "thermoelectric" in any of the details now and I am paranoid. Haven't turned it on to see if I hear a compressor since I am airing it out right now after I cleaned it.

Nnoooo.......only time I find something about it is in the troubleshooting guide and it says something about noise. Popping and cracking when condenser turns on. Oh well, back to Lowe's it goes.

I got you. I know what you are talking about. I've not seen many that come with rails. I think there are one or two with flat wood racks that do. I just slide mine onto the "slots" you mention. Yeah, you have to either take them all the way out or be careful when you are pulling them out.

Sorry. I kind of figured you were dealing with a compressor unit. Like I said, I have one, and if I had it to do over I would have gone TE.

Condensor units almost always have a "bump out" on the interior floor(where the compressor is hidden). Where thermo electric units have a fan right on the inner upper middle. It sits directly over the heat exchanger(looks like a metal plate with fins on it.)

Not even 24 hours from signing up on the site and y'all have saved me some serious heartache. Awesome.

Going to have to figure out where to buy one local. I am too impatient to buy one online.
