I just threw a dog bone across the room while playing with my puppy. It took a bad bounce and cracked the screen of my wife's new MacBook. Now I am in the dog house. I need to take this in for a quick repair. I looked up the cost it was around $400. Ouch!!! I will pay it if I have too, but does anyone have any advice?

Just don't send it to Apple. They'll not only repair the screen, but also everything else they find cosmetically wrong. They repair to factory specs regardless of whether it's just a broken screen.

I went to the Apple store. The total for the repair with parts, labor and CA sales tax was $269 and takes 5 days.

Surprisingly, the cheapest quote I received.

Thanks for all the great suggestions!!!

Must have changed repair policies.. Used to be they had a standard repair cost. Glad it worked out the cheapest for you though.

I'm assuming that your homeowners or renter's insurance policy doesn't cover computers? You might want to double-check that. Mine covers anything, including kid-spit-milk-into-laptop-keyboard issues.

Otherwise, do the Apple Store, even if it's not cheaper but especially it it is!

At that price I would take it. It is not one of the easier parts to replace. You could do a heck of a lot worse.

If it was under applecare they might have thrown you a bone and covered part of it, maybe the labor. The invoice would have the details once you get it back.

Usually they ask if you want to do the cosmetic changes when you take it in to fix something else. If they don't then maybe that particular apple store or employee is at fault.

I had my last one in for covered care to replace ram & battery and they ended up replacing the whole keyboard/top case. All covered under warranty though so I was happy. The machine doesn't work properly anymore, I should part it out.

Good to know. I don't work retail for them so I'm not 100% up to date on all the retail processes and how they work.
