OK upon further inspection, 313-patents and nearly all of them are design patents.

They're important, but not that much.

Unless you think dell is chomping at the bit to release their own version of the b00b tube imac.

Yeah apple is for people who think they are on top of technology, when in fact they are just one of the followers who is using old tech desguised in a pretty box. Anybody who is familiar with Pimp My Ride on MTV can easily compare the cars to an apple.

want an example?

Iphone 4.

How?

One of the features that was advertised as the new thing for the cell phone industry thanks to the introduction of the feature on the iphone 4 was the camera on the front. now how many of you have had a crammy old cell phone like a nolkia that had the camera on the front and on the back?

Another good example of the flaws on apples are their OS. There's been numurous of hacking contests were they take an apple laptop, a PC laptop with Windows and a PC laptop with Linux. at the end of the day the results are that the apple got hacking in minutes, the pc wih windows got hacked in hours and pc with linux wasn't.

Anyhow, dont take an offense due to my comments. I'm an IT expert and I judge apple based on technology (what's inside the beast), and based on security risks, where normal people judge apple on aesthetics.

Its all about marketing...You would think if those other companies had the technology they would have gone out and sold it like apple has. Apple has a pretty good product line and they have an amazing marketing strategy.

From an security, most hackers put out a virus for a particular reason, and the number of mac users vs. PC is still down. A hacker would have more success working on the larger population which in this case is still the PC.

All in all its just a matter of preference, no different than anything else...

What else did the Nokia phones do? How good were those cameras? Were they capable of video recording? Capable of video calling? Capable of anything beyond basically making phone calls and taking photos?

Apple didn't invent the idea, but they sure as hell did a good job making it good and marketing it well.

There are security flaws in every piece of technology. Much of the time vulnerability lies with the user. No system will be secure until the vulnerability (user) is removed.

That's not to say there aren't security issues beyond an idiot user, but those are patched all the time by the OS creator be it Windows or OS X. As I'm sure you know, as an IT expert, most of the time it's not possible to "stay ahead of the game" when it comes to security. You're constantly playing catch up when battling hackers who have nothing better to do than come up with new ways to get around your security.

Yes they were capable of video calls, it was the basic idea behind the camera on the front. Yes the rez of the cameras were better. Hell take the ipone 3gs that came out with a louzy 3 mega pixel camera... when all phones had at least a 5 mega pixel.

apple doesn't come up with the ideas, but they sell them as if they did and that is my point. in their patents they have things like moving your finger on the screen to unlock the screen... seriously?

Yes trying to catch up is what you try to do and building walls around your security risks is the game, but when you take an os that is a cive like the mac os what do you do?

this brings another funny fact about mac fanatics. yeah but macs dont have virus. yes they do, they have less. what is more rewarding for hackers, bringing to their knees a vunerable system or one that prones security?

as said before, dont take offence over it. it's an endless argumentation about mac vs pcs.

Marketing is the keyword. apple is not as advanced technology wise, but their marketing department (and thanks to steve) is the a killer.

I agree, macs are old tech in a fancy box. People mistakenly credit apple for inventing tech that long existed.

The only thing apple has invented is the "i" prefix (not really). They added it to mp3 players (ipod), cell phones (iphone), and tablets (ipad). Each time, they weren't inventive, but somehow they marketed their products well enough to get masses of people to buy them to buy into the lifestyle.

Any correlation between apple and the cigar biz?

I do most of my work on PCs, but I can appreciate Apple's innovation when it comes to interface and presentation.

I can't speak to whether it's "old tech" or not - or for that matter who would give a damn if it was or wasn't. All tech that's available for personal/home use is "old tech", isn't it? That's why you can afford it.

But that said, I can tell you that my 63 year-old mother hated the Droid phone I gave her, but loves the hell out of her new iphone and ipad. She's not a fanboy (hopefully for obvious reasons), but she appreciates the engineering and design that went into the interfaces, and she wouldn't be nearly as informed (read: plugged in) if she didn't have those devices.

I'd agree that the marketing is top notch, and there's no arguing that the products sell - but it's not all marketing.
