So pissed! I really hate all this rain we've been getting.

Besides not being able to replace the muffler on my car due to all the rain and my inspection sticker being expired, I came home from work tonight to find the basement flooded (~6 inches of water). Water above the bottom edge of the coolerdor door ( I keep it standing on end to make getting in easier), and a bunch of our pantry food boxes soaked since I haven't gotten around to getting more sheves for them.

Once we got the water pumped out, I opened the cooler to find that water had gotten in it .

3 boxes, 2 bundles, and 1/2 lb of Heartfelt beads soaked.

The bundles I wasn't so much worried about, but the boxes!!!!

1 box of Mi Barrio El Acere - fortunately these had cello on and after drying off the cello, they look OK and should survive.

1 box of La Riqueza petit robustos - some wetness in the box and damp spots on 4 or 5 of the cigars resting against the bottom - I think these might be OK once they've dried back out, it seems to be only condensation spots.

1 box containing 9 Viaje Summerfest and 5 Exclusivo robustos - totally soaked!

6 Summerfests and 2 Exclusivos look like they were totally submerged under water and the remainig cigars have damp spots on them.

I guess I should consider myself lucky nothing else seems to have suffered anything (except the higher than normal humidity, but without the beads, I'm not sure how to bring it back down).

(sorry for crappy cellphone pics)

Any suggestions on how or if these can be salvaged? I'm going to let them sit out for a while and see things go as the dry off some.

I think I'll dry the boxes at least 3-4 days before trying to put anything back in them.

I don't know what to do with the beads other that just let them sit, but with everything in the basement so wet, they will probably take weeks to dry out. Do Heartfelts ever recover from being submerged under water? Should I just buy more beads and forget about them?

If they're intact yes they(HF) recover. BUT they were in basement water. IMO ditch them and order new ones asap. As far as the sticks let the partial wet ones with only moist wrappers sit our for 24-48hrs. Should dry them out enough. I would also ditch the wet boxes as well and get some snap loc containers for the smokes. Like 5 dollars at wally world for the snaplocks. Or go to your local b&M and get some free boxes if available.
Sorry to hear

you said your beads where soaked... I'm sure they can be saved, just dry em out (100F oven for a few mins) as long as there were no chemicals in the water.
and to bring humidity down in the cooler, Damp Rid for a few mins will soak up a good amount of humidity.
The stuff that was not soaked should be fine as long as there were no chemicals in the water.
Good luck.

Sorry to hear that. I keep my entire stash - wineador & coolidor, in my basement as well. That's definitely one of my biggest fears as well. I agree that if the beads were soaked in dirty water, I would toss them. I don't know what contaminated water would do to them, but I probably wouldn't take the chance. You could probably drybox and segregate the stash that got wet, then re-humidify them slowly. If they were in contact with just rainwater, I'm sure they'll taste/smoke just fine. Anything else, and I'd probably light one to see if they tasted alright, if not, toss them and right them off.

Regards,
Randy

Sorry to hear about the flooding. Also one of my biggest fears living close to a river. This is one of the reasons when I finished my basement I made sure anything of value is atleast 4 feet off the floor. Planning on building a humidor when the wood comes in and it will be suspended at about four feet as well. Hopefully you were able to save most of your stuff and I agree with jfire on your stash.

I keep saying I wish I could have a basement... Might rethink that. I am sorry to hear of the damage. I am not sure if I would smoke the cigars. Who knows what kind of crap was in the water.

Sorry to hear about the flood man. It's a pain having that much damage, then to boot having your sticks buggered as well. On the grounds that you had that much water, I wouldn't trust anything that got soaked. The water is going to be a nasty mixture of god knows what (rain, ground contamination, backed up drainage contamination), and even the ones with just a little wetness have a higher risk molding. Like what was suggested, scrap the soaked sticks and boxes, and see if you can write them off with insurance.

Sorry about the smokes bro. This is the reason I pay attention to the weather and if a flood is coming the humidor is at the highest point in the house.

Not to be harsh, but what kind of cooler was it? I would think a decent cooler would hold out water.
Coleman, bought at Walmart ~11 years ago. 150 qt. Yes, it's a piece of shit, but I don't know what to replace it with as I haven't seen anything large enough at the local Walmart in a long time

Here's a picture of if from before our move:
