Question:

Are there cigars which are blended such that the foot carries a different blend of tobacco than the other parts of the cigar? Just wondering if there are any that if you lit the opposite end, you would get a different smoking experience. I believe that I've heard of some being made this way, but wondering a) if it is true, and b) what percentage of smokes out there are built in this fashion.

This is more out of curiosity than any actual intention of doing so.

Anybody know?

Well I know that both Joya de Nicarg. and La Gloria Cubana have a cigar which is a half one wrapper and half another. But the blend ( filler/binder,etc. ) is the same .

This may go without saying, but if you're not aware, the cap is really what holds the cigar together. If you cut off or burn through the cap by smoking from the wrong end, you're gonna end up with a handful of unbundled leafy bits.

long filler is a bunch of tobacco leaves that should be the same from one end to the other. So my answer is with a standard longfiller filler cigar is NO. Now as was said with the JdN, a different wrapper will certainly change the flavor.

So if this is true why do we generally find that cigars vary in flavor every third? Always thought that was weird.

I remember reading somewhere that Party Lusis were rolled with the tip of the leaves being by the foot causing a milder beginning to the smoke.

But the leaves are torn into smaller pieces and placed in specific locations throughout the bunch... So yes?

Smoking a cigar backwards will most likely lead to a lose wrapper at some point. The cigar is rolled from the foot, which means that the leaf overlaps and holds its self in place..

Some cigars do have a little something extra somewhere along them. I do remember at the My Father factory seeing one of the bunchers take a piece of a longer leaf and add it to the foot... could be where that extra kick comes from in some cigars.

The flavors change by thirds because reviews are done in thirds... If you do a review in halves then you would only mention major changes 2 times, not 3...
As you smoke a cigar you get build up towards the back of it... and the flavor change has to do with the fact that the smoke is not traveling as far, so you could be having slightly hotter or colder smoke and that will affect the flavors... and that's just one thing.

As someone stated earlier if I were going to try it, it would be with the Viaje C-4, Viaje Zombie, Viaje Skull and Bones new releases. Reason being is they are triple capped at both ends so there is a proper cap on each end.

You would probably still have wrapper issues with a cigar like that, as the wrapper is rolled over itself coming from the foot to the head... that means that as the foot burns, the wrapper is held down by the next layer over it. If you do it backwards you will have a top layer of wrapper burning, and nothing holding it down.
