It has been probably more than 15 years since I've fired a gun, so this is my first posting in the firearms thread, I think. First relevant one, anyways.

My work set up a networking mixer with another firm and we went to a local gun club. It was a themed event, circling around "weapons that changed the world", with the emphasis on WWII guns, but included some modern ones as well.

Forgive my lack of knowledge on names, but as I recall the lineup included:

Thompson 45
MP40
Mauser K89
M1 Garand
M1 Carbine
AR15 (M4 Configuration)
AK47
45 Caliber (pistol)
9MM
SAW
and a couple of others with names I've forgotten.

Needless to say it was an awesome time. The first gun I shot was the Mauser... it was funny because I was a couple of minutes late and two people already had bruised shoulders (I was sure to verbally abuse them about it, too). So my first shot in over 15 years, first gun has a fair amount of kick, and what do I do? Put two in the head (of the target paper), one in the neck, and two in the chest - all in a perfect I shape. Worked right down the body. Felt good to know I could be somewhat accurate - of course this is a particularly accurate rifle so the gun probably gets most of the credit.

That was probably my favorite one to shoot. Of course the saw was fun, the AK47 was a good time since it required a bit of focus to eliminate the kick (I think I'm one of the only people in the group who held the trigger in full auto and lit up the paper target). There was one other more modern weapon (for some reason the name brings to mind Desert Storm) and either it or the AR15 had a sight on it with the orange triangle (CoD prepped me well...). That was awesome to use. If I was to buy one now I'd probably try to get an M16 with a similar sight.

I didn't care for the pistols much - they are probably the more practical ones as far as what you'd keep for protection, but just not as fun. I've seen Top Shot so I know you can trick shoot and do pretty cool things, but for me the fun was in the rifles, especially the classic bolt action. Just fun.

So I have no delusions of grandeur about my firearm abilities, but it was a good time, and to light up the target the way I did on the first bullets fired was quite a thrill!

Figured I'd share the fun.. :assaultri

Awesome! That sounds like a blast man. I'm a proud owner of many of these amazing firearms (8mm German Mauser, Colt .45 1911, M1A which is basically a semi-auto M14, AR15, and an AK-47 variant which is unfortunately only semi-auto) The ACOG is also a pretty sweet piece of optics! I've got the 4x on my M4s, and it's hands down the best short/medium range scope you can get. Unfortunately it's not exactly cheap. Glad you got a chance to go out and do something like this. Did you get a chance to take any pictures?

Yeah, there were a couple of cameras floating around. If I can get my hands on the pictures I may put one up. It was a blast... shells everywhere - they did a good job of sweeping them up but they were definitely keeping an eye out for the links for the SAW belts (which they make by hand onsite - assume thats normal?), and they only had one of the clips for the Mauser.

Very nice! It is always nice to go to the range and put some rounds downrange. Sounds like you need to go more often :)
Indeed! I'll probably go with my wife next time. She's never fired a gun but I know she'd like it, and she wants to do it. We actually have a REALLY nice range about 1 mile from our house. I wouldn't mind trying a couple of shotguns, some M16 set ups, and I'd love to shoot that Mauser (or something like it) again. Maybe even a Gewar. If I had to put money on one tomorrow though I'd be hard pressed to not go with the Mauser. Maybe the Garand.

$10 a bird, all goes towards cigars/cigar accessories. What do ya think?
Is there an over/under?

this sounds like so much fun. And given the opportunity I would spend a fortune on lead with a fully auto rifle.

Ahh how I miss shooting guns. Especially being over here in a war zone seeing every single soldier carrying at least one piece. It's like putting candy in front of a kid and telling him he can't have it!!!

Did work pay for all the ammo? judging from how much you shot, im assuming they did
Yeah - and whats even better is that about 5 people had to back out at the last minute, so there were a good number of clips to go around. I was on the AK47, Thompson, and Mauser multiple times. Most people were distracted by the SAW and the pistols.

Oh of course... It was awesome!

The nostalgic aspect of the old ones was nice... Thinking that some 20 yo was manhandling those old rifles in WW2... Crazy. You can almost imagine being pinned down behind crumbling concrete rubble, figuring out how to get a few key shots off while not running out of ammo and making that distinct "I'm out" sound.

tell me about it. i'm going to be pissed if i have to carry my weapon everyday and never fire it once. i mean, i'd even be happy to shoot at a range or something like that. they have a bunch of rabbid dogs here, maybe one of them will try to attack me one day...
