So I am 22 and new to the world of cigars. For the longest time the biggest factor in what I bought went by what had the best marketing, size, and price. Seeing as I am new to this world of cigars and feel because of my age people wont take me seriously I have wondered the cigar world unguided.

Well of the last 2 I smoked most recently, I can't tell you exactly what cigars they were or even what size/gauge. However I do know the name.

Romeo y Julieta: Found the taste to be rather harsh and not one I really enjoyed.

Punch: Now this cigar was wonderful to smoke and left an amazing aroma in the air and a good taste in my mouth. It burned nice and kept a nice ash build up.

So if anyone can help guide me based on what I have provided. Or even tell me if one is a harsher cigar and the other a smooth or whatever the lingo is for cigar taste. Just something so when I go back time and time again I'm not just buying Punch.

Thanks guys!

What's up buddy :welcome:

I think most vets would suggest to try everything that interests you to help figure out what brand/size/flavors suits your tastes. I myself slipped down the proverbial slope last March and have been reading reviews and trying everything even though I had somewhat of an idea what I prefer. Keep in mind everyones palettes is different so just because one person liked it doesn't mean you'll have the exact same experience although it is entirely possible.

I'd also suggest taking a look at the pre-BOTL study guide sticky'd I think in the introduction sub-forum.

Sorry to be vague and not specific but go ahead and light a few different smokes and enjoy. And remember...never say never!

You've come to the right place. Enjoy!

:welcome: from another 22 year old! The newbie sampler thread is a great way to try what other brothers here enjoy smoking, I know it got me hooked on Tatuajes :) Stick around and this hobby will become a passion. Beware the slope!

Yeah I've been on this forum for about a year now. Always trying stuff, just found myself in a nitche of smoking the same cigars, till this punched. Completely changed my perspective on what a cigar can be.

I am in college so money is often tight, thats why I just want to know what taste/body the Punched are classified as. I just found the romeo y Julieta too harsh for me.

Think you mean Punch. all though they aren't brands that you'll hear a lot of people talking about here unless they are the Cuban versions, you are getting in to the "premium" cigars. From there your choices are endless, your tastes will change the more you smoke. Best thing is just to try as much new stuff as you can, you may hate some, you may find new favorites. Give some stuff like Brickhouse, Fuente, Oliva, EP Carrillo a shot, good smokes that won't beat up the wallet.

When you say Punched do you mean Punch cigars? I'm also assuming these are the NC brands. I smoked punch quite often when i first started, tastes/experiences varied depending on the marca, so without knowing which one tough to make any recomendations, but your on the right track.

Everyone has different tastes and there is something for everybody that's why it's a good idea to take notes on what you like and don't like so when you go into the shop the staff can make better recomendations. doesnt have to be anything elaborate just quick notes buy a small writting pad and jot down notes. and if you go into a B&M and don't feel they are taking you seriously just go somewhere else where they do.

Are you buying your sticks at a cigar store, if so they should be able to direct you and keep you within budget. When I started I really liked the RyJ Reserve Madruo.

Yes sorry for the confusion. My mind wondered with the name and made up its own brand, haha.

Along with taking notes on cigars, how can I find which cigars are full bodied, the gauge, etc. I want to make sure i know exactly what I smoked and how it tasted/burned.

the thing with strength of the cigar is everyone has thier own scale. comes down to your nicotine sensitvity. here's an example Me and My buddy burningman both smoked a disel unholy cocktail, he calls it a gut puncher i call it a nice Med-full boddied smoke. So one mans full bodied cigar is anothers Med-Full. with experience you'll develop your own scale, but generaly speaking you can go to a manufacuter website and they'll list all the information your looking for as far as size and strength and remember full flavored (Flavor) and full bodied(strength) arent the same thing.

Any shop employee should hopefully be able to tell you basic information(or be fired).

You can read reviews of cigars and see if your experience is similar to the cigar you smoked, this may help you identify certain things as well as get you thinking about the cigars. Or just say "F... it" and smoke em until you figure it out, lol.

padron's regular line, tats, brickhouse, cao la traviata, oliva, fuente regular production, nestor miranda, joya de nics, would be a good place to start.

Buy some singles and try them out to get a sense of the type of cigar(s) that you like. There will always be cigars to buy. Better to take your time and enjoy the adventure.

5ers are always a good place to start as well. 1 to try now and then a few to age. If you don't like them, trade/bomb/sell them.

Good luck

I'm pretty sure 'bomb' is just what a bomb is- drop em on someone else who may like em. Just a guess though. As for the Punch...they make many different sizes (vitolas) in the line and other lines as well such as the Uppercut and others. Most are med-full in flavor and body. (yeah that's vague but a cigar is a 1 on 1 thing so I cant know how full you think a cigar is) I tend to find the Punch London Club (size in regular line) to be a great smoke at a nice price. The suggestions of Brickhouse, Padron, Oliva, and the like are a good place to start. Keeping a journal of what you liked and why is also a good idea so you wont have a problem remembering what cigar you liked. Also the RyJ you had may just have been young or you may not like the wrapper it had. Don't necessarily judge an entire brand by one cigar in one line.
Also the forums here have reviews and there is all kinds of literature on cigars if you simply look. You may also want to give Podcasts like Dogwatch a try. www.cigarmedia.tv is the address for dogwatch if your interested.
