We play that down here all the time. We do not call it cornhole. For reasons already said where I'm from no one would play a game called cornhole and if you brought it up, you might get your ass kicked. We play bag toss.
I also play a variant of this game with my grandfather called washers. It's a board with carpet on it and 3 holes running vertical. Top is 3pts middle is 2pts and bottom is 1pt. We throw big washers probably the size of an adult palm. I like that version too.
