I'd guess '79....But how's it possible to date it that far back since there weren't anydate codes? I realize they could take various things from the box and date the era though. Just wondering...

It's possible if he actually bought these back in the 70's or early 80's. Also there are sellers of vintage stock that keep detailed records on the provenance of their inventory.
