talk about a high pressure decision. After losing engine power, the pilot told air traffic control he was coming back, then notified them he would head to Teterboro (A smaller airport in Jersey that deals mostly with corporate jets) because it's closer. Very quickly knew he wouldn't make it, and decided to ditch in the Hudson. Air Traffic control confirmed he cleared the George Washington bridge by 900 ft.

BTW, he flew F-4 for the air force.

Thank God and the Pilot everyone made it out safely. Amazing story. I had a brief scare when I heard the story as my daughter was flying home on US Air from Germany via Charlotte (the destination of the Hudson river flight) at that time. A not-so-quick check revealed she did not have a lay over in NY (and had a different flight #).

Amazing -- I heard about the crash on the radio but wasn't paying attention and figured the worst. If only every pilot had the training and presence of mind that this one had. Lets see how many kids will be named for him, he sure deserves it.

Sorry, Swampfox, never heard the name before. Symptom of FOGness I guess.

Small world.

I was at the B&M and 40 years my senior guy started talk to me. He was asking about what I do and so forth. When he found out I was in the USAF he started talking about the military and come to find out he's friends with the pilot that brought the plane down in the water. He supposedly had a 10 mile glide path but decided to put it down in the water because he did not think he would make it the 10 miles.

Well I was reading some of the 1st hand accounts from the passengers this morning. A lady sent a text to her husband that there plane was going to crash. Then after it was in the water the people in the back were trying to open the back doors, and they wouldn’t budge from the pressure on the outside. With water swirling around her waist, seat cushions and carry on luggage floating all over the place, one lady took charge and told them they would not be able to get out that way and to hear for the front. One lady had an infant and a girl less then 3 with her that was frozen with fear. After all is said and done it is a story I wish I had in MY story files, but at the time I can’t imagine the adrenaline rush and sense of panic you’d have to overcome in order to help control the mob. I got a bit choked up reading about the lady with the kids.

The pilot used to fly F-4 Phantoms in the USAF. Thank god he never learned to land them on a carrier.
I used to work on F-4's in the Marines and we would occasionally deploy to an Air Force base and marvel at the finesse of the USAF jockeys when they would touch down with an aircraft that has the glide slope of a brick.
