Well, my girlfriend is a vegetarian... which basically makes me a vegetarian. /pulpfiction
(Seriously, though...)

The amount of meat I consume these days is pretty low. I don't buy it at the grocery store usually, due to price. And the stuff in the dining halls either looks like something you don't want to eat anyway, or I've had it so often I'm just sick of it. Bacon though... mmmmm.
Does she have any go to resources that she/you have found particularly helpful?
My girlfriend is a longtime vegetarian and has made coconut flakes taste like bacon, walnuts taste like ground beef with taco seasoning, and many other faux meat dishes. We'll have to do some smoke-outs and you can pick her brain. Feel free to send me any questions you have and I'll have her answer.

Heard about this on the AM radio the other day, discussed how it can solve blood pressure problems and even diabetes and other issues. Thinking about giving it a try myself, my only issues however are a bit of a beer belly and not enough energy.

I've been gifted the gift of terrible genes from my Mother and have the joyous health of terrible blood pressure and cholesterol. I'm only 24 and in great shape but my BP continues to soar up to 191/105 (down at 155/85 with meds) and my cholesterol levels shot right on by 300 last time I had it checked.

About 8 months ago I really cracked down on my eating habits to limit salt intake and crappy foods as much as possible. Turns out that hasn't really made a dent in my health (on the charts anyway). Time to take a more drastic approach. I'm going to try out a 90% vegetarian diet (sticking as close to vegan as I can within that same 90%). I love milk, dairy, and meat as much (if not more) than the next guy but I also like living so...

My fiancee has been a vegetarian basically her entire life so veggie friendly grocery shopping is already a habit of mine. So far it's been two weeks and I only ate the pepperoni off of one pizza slice so Meghan could have it after she completed her triathlon (no one ordered a single cheese pizza?!)

  • No more milk in the house :help:
  • Sticking to unsweetened almond milk and Silk coffee creamer
  • Avoiding cheese but will have just the wine instead...
  • I'll keep fish/seafood to a minimum as well until I can see what effect I have on my BP/Cholesterol levels
  • When out for special occasions I may indulge in some hot wings but instead of 18 I'll eat 6 and a side order of chips and salsa

Anyone else a veggie man? Anyone doing it strictly for health reasons?
Good for you! Taking control of your life at a young age certainly will reap much in benefits when you reach my age and older! My physician, Harvard Med., told me when I first began to visit him decades ago, the guys he sees with problems in the later stage of life are the guys that didn't start eating right and exercising early enough in life. That didn't sink in with me for about 10 years then I realized what he was saying while in my early 40's. I still don't eat as disciplined as I would like but I exercise at 5:30am each day. My wife is trying to shop/cook more organically and making glutten free meals... My trainer has always told me that weight loss is 20% exercise and 80% of what you eat, so don't eat crap.

I'll hit 55 this year and planning to do the Tough Mudder in celebration of my birthday... ; )

Besides, I've got 8,700+ cigars to get through before I die!

Ok, I am not a vegetarian kind of the direct opposite. But the 2 sites below deal with a lot of issues with old diets and why some have failed. But in the recipes sections there are some really good veggie dishes to try, we are cutting out all starches, wheat, grain. There are good coliflower pizza crust recipes and coliflower mash potatoes, and rice. Look thru and see if here are any good veggie dishes to try.

Very interesting thread. I agree with everything you guy's are doing.

Daniel, I'm the same way. I'm in decent shape, but my Cholesterol is way high so when I turned 30 I went on Meds and now it's under total control, but I eat meat only twice a week max. I love to BBQ and it kills me that I can't cook out everyday, but you just can't cook sausage, steak, burgers, and pizza all the time.

Try eating more beans like I do... I also eat 1 cup of oatmeal every morning not only because it's good for me, but because it fills me up.

I usually weigh 180 lbs (I'm 5' 9"), but with a six month old I gained weight up to her birth... now i'm getting it back off

Watch the documentary "Hungry for Change".

Good luck!

P.S. If you like to drink beer/alcohol... back off of that and your BP will drop.
