B&M Rest?

So everyone has their own time frame for which to rest cigars after they have been shipped...For some it's a week, for others two, and so on.

What about resting cigars after a trip to your local B&M?

You do a few errands, and you've stopped at your B&M with a handful of smokes. You smoke one right away because it's a sunny day, and your to do list is entirely crossed out.

But what about the others you bought? Do you rest them for any specific amount of time before smoking?

Depends on the B&M. I'm speaking hypothetically as I really don't do much of any buying from B&M's, but if I did, these would be the considerations for how much rest they got.

If I didn't know the B&M at all, I would probably rest them for a couple of weeks just for the heck of it. I would check the RH on any hygrometers I could see to get a general feeling for how they kept their cigars, but without really knowing the place I wouldn't put a ton of stock in what I saw. Who knows how consistent they are?

If I knew the B&M well, and knew that they kept their cigars at X% RH consistently, I would then judge by the difference between their RH and mine. If close, I wouldn't worry about resting much if any. If we are talking 5%+, I'd rest 'em for a while.

In the end, it really depends on a number of variables, but the biggest question is going to be how different is the environment they store their cigars in versus the environment you are going to be storing them in.

Usually I let them sit a week or two to get 'em acclimated to what I keep my humi's at before I spark 'em.

For me it depends on the stick also. I'll buy a few and make one of them something that doesn't mind being kept at 70%. I'll smoke it then, the others will hang out in my humi for at least a week, hopefully I'll forget about them and they will stay in there longer.

If I smoked one that day and they were smoking good, game on. If not, they would probably be put in the humidor and forgotten about for a while. In general if you've bought it from a decent B&M they've stored it correctly and since the cigars won't be traveling in the mail I wouldn't worry about it.

I honestly can't remember buying a cigar at a B&M and having a problem with it because of how it was handled there. Now of course they are some bad B&Ms out there and I have walked out of a couple without buying anything! So all the reg shops I go to I smoke right out of the B&M and the ones I take I don't worry about any rest time.

Another thing to consider if you are worried about it, is when did the B&M get them in. Remember they get them in a truck just like you do when you order online. So if it's a brand new cigar that just came out, or stock you think they just got in then you may want to let them rest.

Depends on store. I've been to a couple that were clearly too humid and the smokes reflected it. Those stores I ask if I can smoke what I brought and just rest the ones I bought. Others are fine and I smoke right away.

Yeah. I don't think there is a "one size fits all" here.

I like to rest mine for several weeks before I smoke them. Ive had bad luck at my local b&m. Any time I light one right up it always tastes bad.

My local b&m usually keeps their humidor pretty well regulated but I still like to let them rest in my own humidor for a couple days to a couple weeks. That's just my personal preference. I also have no trouble smoking them that day or before I let them rest. It's just your preference I guess as long as they keep them maintained.

In Hawaii, while we don't have too many B&Ms anymore, our overall RH is pretty conducive to smoking immediately. For long distance purchases however, given the long travel/flight time and sometimes drastic change in temp/humidity, I ususally wait @ 2 weeks before sampling.

2 weeks just so I know they are at the right humidity, would hate to waste a smoke if it did not smoke right.

Every B&M in my area over-humidifies their sticks (at least for me) so I let them sit at least a week.

My main B&M (Coronas) is grossly overhumidified.... so I never smoke anything from their stock when I go there nor do I ever smoke anything immediately after purchasing it.
