I've had Diabetes for the last five years, found out when I went in for my 40 year checkup. Today at my Dr. appt, I was told I had to start insulin. I'm not overly thrilled about this, it's $120 a month for the medicine and syringes, but of course the bigger factor is that my Diabetes is out of control. I know this will help, but I wish it wouldn't have gotten to this point. Needless to say, diet and exercise will now be a part of my daily routine.
Sorry, just feeling sorry for my self is all, mostly for knowing it's all my fault for the lifestyle I've been leading. :frownno:
I'm a T1 diabetic. You'll get over feeling sorry for yourself. Wallowing in self-pity is normal, but if you let it rule you, you'll only get sicker. :stickbeat
I found out at 29 that I was diabetic. I am 32 now. At 29 my "bodybuilding" and high-stress lifestyle contributed to developing the disease. I used Metformin for a while until it didn't work anymore. Numerous daily tests ran in the 300 range.
We tested to see how much insulin my body produces and discovered it was near ZERO. My doctor (endocrinologist - see one, not just your primary care) put me on an insulin pump. It's a small beeper-sized device which has a tiny needle. It feeds insulin into your body non-stop during the day. You change the placement of the needle every 3 days (depending on how much insulin you use). It's painless.
Since going on the pump, my daily tests average about 100 and my a1c values have been averaging ***6*** - that of a healthy, normal adult. I've also made adjustments to my bodybuilding routines and diet to ensure I don't eat the shit I did at 29. More cardio, less sugar and carbs, and a better understanding of what can hurt you in the long run. I'm in better condition now at 32 than I was at 18.
Insulin isn't a cure, but it's a way to make sure you and your body get back on track. Change your lifestyle NOW. You'll see improvements, feel better, and get back on track sooner than you think.
Let me know if you have questions and good luck.
That said - I'm headed to the gym. F**k diabetes.
