Mossberg 590 in almost any of the configurations.

Cheap, will cover up both sides of a doorway and won't penerate through 6 walls killing someone else in the house or your neighbor.

Shotgun = best close range weapon in the world.

Oh and he won't need to spend a lot of time at the range to put some 00 or 4 buck in some assholes chest.

If he thinks the 12 with 3" shells is too much get him the 20 gauge.
100% agree. The wife has tried all my weapons and the ease of use plus the wide range of coverage led her to pick the Browning 12 gauge pump as her favorite. It was easy for her to load, point and pull the trigger. I pity the poor fool that tries to get into the house when I am gone. Double tap.

Shotgun is definitely the way to go. I would suggest a pump shotgun though. I've read several articles where stated that the pump shotgun is a very good choice due to just the sound of racking a shell in would scare the beejeezus out of most intruders, coupled with the usual shotty pluses. Ie wide spread, easy aiming, ease of use and maintenance, etc...

Well....

It sounds like I'll be advising my Dad about the benefits of a Shotgun, as it would appear there are many when it comes to being used specifically for protection/safety etc.

Thanks everyone for the input!

I have many guns at home but for home defense I have a mossberg pump action shot gun with a breaching barrel. In the event that you can not get a shot off the breaching barrel is razor sharp and would do some serious damage. Just something to look into. Also it is sweet looking.

I swear by my Mossberg. When you absolutely need to send someone to the morgue caught breaking and entering absolutely overnight...

A shotgun is typically a good choice.
However, remember that practice is most important no matter what he chooses. Ammo selection can also be critical in home defense. Pistols, rifles, and shotguns are all capable of shooting through home walls and going into neighbors' homes.

Exactly...the only reason for the pistol on my nightstand is to get me to my shotgun in the closet. Someone in the house hears him rack a shotgun and they'll leave before they get a chance to taste the shot.

Shotguns are the safest and most effective w/o a doubt.

I agree with everyone's shotgun suggestions. But if he is set on a handgun, don't get hung up on calibers. In fact I would recommend a 9mm. With the right kind of ammo, a 9mm can emulate a much bigger caliber. Plus 9mm does not bite the shooter as much as a 45 . So if you want to ease him into the idea of shooting more, thats the way to go.

Now for the handgun I would select for him, a 9mm USP. Great safety/decock, great mag release, great accuracy and out of the 20,000+ rounds i have shot or seen shot out of one, I have NEVER seen one fail
