Slightly related question. What do you guys think about guys like Pete Johnson and George Brightman saying current production CCs are just not any good?
They are selling NCs, what are they gonna say?

The Cuban production since 2008 has been stellar, IMHO.
But they are not in competition with CCs for a large portion of the market (US). Also, what I have heard them say is that current CCs are not as good as they used to be and not as good as they can be, haven't seen any interviews of them saying that CCs just aren't good anymore (not saying they haven't said that, only what I have heard).

EDIT: also not sure how old the interviews I am referring to are
I am basing my opinion on my experience with smoking several hundred Cuban cigars a year rather than "what I have heard".

Smoke what you like, like what you smoke.

Not sure which Pete Johnson interview you are referring to, but I know he believes that Cuban tobacco is some of the best in the world ... what HSA does with it, however, doesn't do it justice many times. We're talking about fermentation and taking care of the leaf, as well as construction issues. But you have to keep in mind that Pete smoked a lot of Cubans from the '80s and '90s.

I think most agree that, on the whole, construction really started to go up a notch or three starting in 2006, and that everything since has been much better than the previous 7 years or so (with exceptions, of course, I've had a lot of awesome 2003s myself). I think that 2008, 2010, and so far 2012 were all stellar years, but I haven't smoked nearly as many as a lot of guys here have, plus I am aging most of the newer stuff (to me, 2010 is still a pretty young cigar by Cuban standards). But it's still a bit of a crap shoot, which it shouldn't be (I think that's what Pete and others are driving at).

IMVHO, many of the LEs from 2010-current have been great too, which was not the case before (based on my admittedly limited sampling).

The odds are much worse for the uber-popular cigars (Monte #4 and #2, PSD4, CoRo, etc).

Wasn't trying to disagree or say anything about your opinion, I apologize if it came across that way. Was mainly trying to add information to the conversation regarding the comment about how one poster heard PJ and GB saying current production CCs are not any good, adding that I have heard them (not me) say that that cc used to be better and can be better, but have not heard them say they are not any good. I Don't have an opinion on the matter because I do not have the experience nor the knowledge on CCs to have one, just merely passing along information. No offence intended, apologize if any was taken.

I believe this was the point he was making in the interview I am thinking of.

Pre 95, if properly stored is awesome. Most cigars had major blend changes after 95. Late 2001 through mid 2003 again awesome. Pretty consistently good from 2008 onward. Of course there are exceptions. 99 overall was not a good year but I've had stellar boxes of Partagas 898s & LGC MdeO#1s.

Greetings, I thought 1959 was the year of all years but who could get or afford them. The last hand full of years have been all pretty good and some don't need the major aging that they use to, on certain cigars. Thank You Habanos S.A. !!!!

It's subjective. For cigars I have aged myself, 2005, 2006, 2008 have been stellar, and some of the recent production ('10. '12) have been some of the best fresh I have ever had.

For smokes I have bought with age (within reason), 1998, 1997, 2003 have been standout years.

Ask 10 BOTLs, and you are likely to get 10 different lists.
........
