1. My favorite is Bulleit. Its made with a higher rye content so its less sweet and has a touch of spice.
2. Evan Williams Single Barrel - this is your more typical sweeter bourbon, but nice smooth and flavorful
3. Buffalo Trace - somewhat in between the two, not as sweet as EW but sweeter than Bulleit

Can't go wrong with either of these. I have also tried, Knob Creek, Makers Mark, Four Roses, and Woodford and Gentlemen Jack (although technically not a bourbon) and prefer the 3 I listed above, but everyone's tastes are different.

As you can see... everyone has a different brand. Probably just like scotch. I think most people start with either Maker's or (wheat.. sweet), Jefferson or Elijah Craig (Traditional... or mild spice), or a high rye like Buffalo Trace or Woodford's. And then go from there, depending on what fits their tastes. Depending on how you like your scotch... you might be able to pick a bourbon similar. Although I don't know anything about scotch... so "spice" may not be a associated term.

Personally I like a spicy bourbon when i smoke. And a sweeter bourbon when I don't.

What did you think of the Buffalo Trace? Its one of my favorites.

I really like it. I can't drink it neat (like I do my scotch) but with a splash of water its awesome. Spice seems to replace the peaty taste associated with my love of scotch, which is fine. I don't care for super sweet anything leaning towards my preference to savory/spicy/smokey (except beer, gimme all the malty beers mmmmmmmm). I seem to be filling in my holes in my palette. Now I can pull the bourbon if I want spicey, scotch if I want peaty, rum if I want sweet ETC. I've got an itch to try as many bourbons as possible now, which is how I was with cigars/scotch/pipes.

Great thread and good suggestions by all. See if you can find a store that has
a Barrel that they selected for particular store. They typically discount the the bottle
by 8-10% and their personal selection is usually much better than the Vatted reg release
bourbon's on the shelf.

Gotta second the recommendation for Bookers. ..it's serious fire water, but it has excellent flavors that come through beautifully.

I just picked up a bottle of Trader Joe's bourbon. It was about $15 and I would not recommend it as a sipping bourbon as it's a bit harsh. But, as a spirit for mixing drinks with (like a good Old Fashioned), it's really good. It's nice to know that there's a good mixing bourbon that I can keep on hand so that the better stuff that I drink straight doesn't have to go into a mixed drink.
