Over the years I have found that if you are interested in stocking up on cigars, the best way is first smoke enough cigars to know what you like. Second start looking for sales. I bought tons of cigars off of C-Bid. DAMN Devil site. Once you know what kinds you like you can bid away on signles and 5 packs and boxes. It is a great way to buy cigars at a reduced price. B&M are always going to be more expensive but its also a great way to try new things too. Lastely make firends on the board here at BOTL. As you make friends and begin branching out you can do "in search Of" in the market place and guy on here will help you out. It has always amazed me how some guys here can find awesome deals to pass along to you. But the easiest way of bulding a stash is always buy a 5 pack of whatever you want to smoke. Smoke one or two and keep the rest.

That's where my problem is, i see all this great cigar porn but im still finding my taste and palate. I can taste the difference between a cheap Macanudo and a Padron and tell the quality and taste, but im still having a hard time picking up on the flavors and smells that i read other people talking about. So for now im only getting fivers until i find something i can smoke 10 of and still love then i will buy a box.
Don't worry about all the nuances, they may or may not develop, just decide what you like. It takes a while to learn what you like and if you get into all the new releases it will cost you more to learn. I've learned there are many, many great sticks that I like and are reasonably priced.

OK i have a question that i have been trying to solve but need help. How do you build up a good inventory without dropping your monthly mortgage payment. so far i have been buying in 5 packs and singles from the local b&m (86% tax plus sales tax and markup in Utah), but that doesn't add up to many extra cigars. I only smoke a cigar maybe twice a week if im lucky so its hard to drop 200 bucks on a box. Any tips or tricks?
Looks like if you live close to the northern Utah border, you could get stuff cheaper based on tax break.

I have no idea if state cigar and cigarette taxes are in line, but I assume their close. Certain online vendors will not charge their state tax if shipped out of state. Not sure if they apply the Utah tax on it or not. Worth a shot.

I know what you mean, I've been smoking for years and still can't pick up on all the subtle nuances that many other people can taste. I do know what I like and what I don't like though and when I started buying I bought primarily based on price only to find out the majority of things that I bought I didn't like. Never buy on price alone and don't fall into the trap of trying to load up right away just for the sake of having a collection. Many of the people with these large collections have been smoking for many years to acquire what they currently have.

I agree with everyone on here who said don't jump into buying boxes. Your tastes may change and you won't be able to recoup the money spent on the large majority of regular release sticks, that is just throwing money away. Others on here have said don't chase LE stuff right away and that is also a good call as if you have a limited budget it doesn't make sense to blow it all right away on sticks that you may not enjoy. However, as long as you are buying Tat or Liga LE stuff you won't lose money on resale and much of this stuff will instead increase in both demand and value over time allowing you to not lose your ass. There is a reason why many regular release sticks on the for sale part of this site are such a great deal, it's because somebody is losing money on the sale - so it would do you good to remember to not throw your money away on boxes that you aren't positive that you'll like.

My final thought is that I would rather have 7-10 sticks that I know I love in quantities that allow me to both enjoy them now and have some to age. I find that this is often better than chasing every hyped release and every new stick that comes out with a bunch of hoopla. If I can get this stuff then great, if not at least I have a humi full of shit that I know I love. But this didn't happen overnight - I sampled a lot, tried lots of fivers and took my time to build a collection and find sticks that had everyday appeal to me and I'd suggest that you do the same. Sorry if any of this came of as redundant.
