My buddy is going to Argentina in a couple weeks and was going to be on the look out for CCs while he was there. Any suggestions on medium-full bodied, any size cigars? Thanks, I'm really newbish when it comes to CCs!

get one of each, it's the only way to be sure! o)

seriously, the ramon allones specially selected, for regular production, seems to be hitting quite nicely in current years.

edit: totally deferring to ben on this one!

Recent Bolivars 2010-2011 have been smoking really well. So they would be my choice.

I'd second the Bolivars, especially the PC & CJ. I've been to Argentina several times. Lovely cigar shop & lounge in the BA airport duty free area. Prices are rather high, though.

I wouldn't limit myself to a certain brand/vitola when shopping this way. If I had a friend that was gonna be on the hunt for me, I'd advise him to go for aged stock if at all possible. And not even that old really, but give him a list of a few to grab if say he sees any 2006 or 2008 boxcodes....even 2010s have been pretty damn good.

2006 Monte 2s or most anything if you can get w/ 6 years on it
2008 Upmann Mag 46, RASS
2010 PSD4, RASS

Those are just a few examples....but make my point. Age 1st, then preference from there 2nd. Thats what I'd do anyway.

I don't agree. Sometimes age just means the cigars are old and/or picked over.
Don't disagree with that either necessarily. But given the choice...go with vintages that are historically better. Obviously not 2000-2002 stuff in general...but all things considered, I'd grab 08 boxes over most 2010/2011 stuff...unless you can open em and see for yourself, and see some stellar young boxes. I'm envious of people who can shop for cubans this way.

What is the issue with boxes from 2002 brother? And vintage......is at least 20 years old IMHO.

And I would take a 2010-2011 box over 2008 any day so if your friend finds one don't hesitate, they are excellent.

I wasn't using the term vintage to imply the years I'd mentioned would be "vintage" cigars Ben.....but rather was simply referring to years/crops of tobacco.

As for 2002...i'm sure there are plenty of good boxes, and i'm speaking generally of course. Fairly sure there are some "sale" cigars from 2002 floating around out there, but I know 2000 & 2001 were supposedly the worst. I've smoked at least a couple Punch DCs from 02 though that were plugged so bad they were unsmokable. I'd rather purchase stock closer to where QC had improved is all I was saying.

And yes, I know your stance on 2008 stock well Ben. I've just yet to hear anyone else who agrees w/ it.

You need to start hanging with the right people then :glassesgr

As far a I know 99-01 was generally the years with issues. I would happily take any 2002 boxes out there. I think you have had some bad luck with 2002.

It is hard buying from 99-01 but when I have the chance to inspect the cigars constructions i wouldn't hesitate since the sticks that are rolled properly are excellent from those years.
