I'm still really new to the cigar world, is it bad form to go to the local cigar shop it a place like cigar international and smoke your own stogie? Or is customary to smoke what you buy? I'd most likely make some minor purchases while I'm there, but my little humidor is busting at the seams with some sticks I want to try.

It depends, some places will charge a cutting fee and I think it's ok to bring your own sticks there. Or if you live in a state where they serve drinks or food, order something while you're there

If I plan to do that, I leave it in the car and ask first- tell them I'm gonna buy some stuff but if it's ok with them I brought something I want to smoke.

Then I play it off as no big deal if they say no. I just pick something out and light up

I think it depends on how often you go/shop there. If you're always buying from there or the cigar you bring was purchased there previously, I don't see a problem with it. Now if you've only been there once or twice, I'd at least walk out with a single.

Would you go into a restaurant with your own food, grab a table and start eating? Likely not. The owner of that shop/lounge has to pay for the air conditioning or heat you are enjoying, the chair you're sitting in, the TV you're watching, the wi-fi you're using, the magazine you're reading, and so on. Have the decency to buy a cigar from the shop if you're going to use the lounge.

I think I stated in my original post that I would be making a purchase. The question was are you only expected to smoke what you purchase THERE.

Anytime I go to a shop/lounge I always smoke something I just bought there. If I had a locker it would be different but my local shop doesn't allow you to smoke inside.but that being said I would be renting the locker from them.

It depends on the shop really. Some don't mind and some do.

Yep. One local shop doesn't seem to care, especially if you're buying several sticks while there.
The other place put in a firm "no smoking anything you didn't buy here" policy like a year ago.

Yeah depends on the shop .... I've been to places that make you purchase to chill but never one that said you can't smoke what you brought. I also typically do not buy and smoke because I'd rather it sit in my humi so it smokes how I like it to smoke

Ok. I guess the consensus is ask if they mind. Thanks guys.

The reason I ask is I live in an apt and have a smoke free gf so I don't have a handy place to smoke. The 6+ inches of snow I'm currently sitting in makes smoking outside fairly unenjoyable as well. Just eager to try some of the stuff I have.

I pay a yearly fee for a locker at my B&M, i smoke what i want there anytime i want to. That being said, i still buy cigars and drinks from them every time i go there. do i smoke the cigars that i buy that day? NO. I like my cigars on the drier side 63%-65% RH and both hygro's in the walk-in always show 70%. I put the cigars i buy in either my locker or take them home and store them in the wineador. I smoke either something i brought from home or pull out of my locker.

What's an average for a locker? Maybe very broad so maybe what would you be comfortable paying to rent one

This is probably the best option..

I think you will find most places wont care as long as youre buying something from them... or if what you are smoking was bought from them previously..

But it would be respectful to ask before just firing one up..

The reason I ask is I live in an apt and have a smoke free gf so I don't have a handy place to smoke. The 6+ inches of snow I'm currently sitting in makes smoking outside fairly unenjoyable as well. Just eager to try some of the stuff I have.
Totally understandable.. I RARELY smoke what I buy on that day when I go to my lounge/B&M.. for the same reasons posted by others above..

But... I do pay for a locker/lounge membership... I almost always buy a fistful of sticks while I am there (far more than I am smoking that day).. etc..

Frankly, Ive brought sticks into the lounge that I not only didn't buy there.. but that they don't carry at all.. and the owner has been APPRECIATIVE of it...

Its all about the approach...

I've told him "here's something Im getting online.. have you thought about carrying it? I would buy it from you if it were an option..."... or... at times have brought in HTF, LE, or CC stuff and shared it with the owner (or staff)... and they have been tickled pink over it...

Again, I am at the same time usually picking up 3 or 4 sticks that they DO carry.. and spending money there..

But they never complain (or care) about what I choose to actually put a match to that day...

I've been bring my own from home more and more lately. Mainly because of the humidity issue, like Skully stated. But I always ask before I light up no matter how many times they've told me it ok and I always buy at least a couple sticks before I leave.

Having a conversation with your B&M is key.

That really depends on where you are talking about...

You cant get a locker at my lounge without paying for a lounge membership first... so.. $200 for an annual membership.. plus $50 for the locker... = $250 a year..

I know places where just a locker is much cheaper..

and I know places where a locker/membership is MUCH more...

just depends....
