Some people love it and almost exclusively smoke super aged tobacco. You lose a lot of sweetness but also almost all tanin, profiles tend to be more floral and almost perfumey...generally. El Corojo which was used until 1992 was more durable.

Id be concerned with storage, typically with anything over ten years Ill want single owner and not something thats been sitting in a large warehouse for a decade, lots of that stuff out there. Also, I would be wary of 2001 lanceros in general.

I picked up a box of CoLa last year AMO MAR 16, theyre fantastic.

I've smoked a number of '01 CoLas over the years....some were Heavenly, and many were tight or almost plugged, which kils the flavor of a lancero, as they were made to be "sipped". I think some of the advice above is spot on. Though it may be a trusted vendor, unless they have had them since 2001, you just don't know how they may have been stored over the years.

I ordered and received a 5x5 box and 2001s showed up. I promptly sent them back for a refund. They were in pretty rough shape. 6 had old dry mold on them. 4 had enough wrapper damage to be considered unsmokeable, 11 more had minor foot damage. At least 6 had hard knots I could feel which probably meant they were plugged. It was pretty obvious by looking at the overall condition that they had not always been stored properly. I was disappointed that the vendor did not differentiate between current production and old stock, I would have stayed away from the discount 2001s. It cost me about $40 shipping both ways.
I used the credit for a couple boxes BCGs and will be asking a lot of questions before I order from them again.

Yeah, that doesn't sound good at all. I wouldn't be happy.

Cigars in cardboard packaging for over 15 years... I've heard they taste terrible if left in cardboard for years

Personally I know of exactly 1 source I'd trust to buy aged sticks from. Some outfits struggle getting newish stock to you in reasonable shape. 15 years? Uh no. :cigar:

I can't comment on 15 years but I have some VR Clasicos from 2005 and they are really good. I think in general better sealing packaging will allow cigars to hold their flavor longer.

Its all about how they have been stored.
Right. Too many places are a little slipshod on their storage. The latest box of Edmundos I got in are a bit wet and need to dry a bit before they'll smoke well. I keep my humidor between 60 to 62%, some vendors are obviously higher or some sticks are too close to the humidification source.

Yeah I've heard that. Don't think that's the issue tho. Nomsayin? :cigar:
Christ some of the worst cigar handling I've seen is at my local B&M. I only buy sticks occasionally from them of stuff I know they sell a lot of. They are clueless.

Sit down with the owner and help him out
The store owner is a lawyer from St. Louis. The manager is a woman who's a cigarette smoker and simply doesn't care. I caught her wiping mold off sticks she had stored right in front of the home style room humidifiers they use. They go through Montecristos and Fuentes at a pretty rapid clip so I buy from those boxes and from nothing else in there. Its hopeless otherwise.
