I need a cordless drill and maybe an impact driver to have around the house. I don't generally do anything too heavy duty, mostly harry homeowner type stuff, but I want enough power on tap to get things done. I'm not adverse to spending money if it means quality, but I'm not looking to drop huge coin on something just for the name that's on it. That said I don't really know much about cordless drills, so any input would be appreciated.

Milwaukee makes the best IMO. Followed by dewalt. That being said. Those are professional tools and you will be wasting money buying them for home use. The ryobi line has served me well for he last 8 years. You can get them a hell of a lot cheaper and they will last you way longer than the batteries will.

I'm a porter cable guy. Everything I've got from them has been absolutely top notch. Stay the hell away from Dewalt, it used to be good, its quality has declined. Milwaukee is also good. Hell, for medium duty use, the lithium ion bosch stuff is decent too. The batteries stay charged forever!

I will say this regardless of brand... If you can afford to get an impact driver as well, get it. I never thought I'd need one until a friend of mind gave me an extra one from his shop. I'll never not have one now.

Surprised nobody mentioned Craftsman yet. That's what I use around the house now. My parents purchased a Ryobi which isn't bad either but they had issues with batteries with them few years back. Things could've changed now.

I have a Milwaukee drill and impact driver set. It's a 12 volt "homeowner" set. Nothing fancy but it works great. No complaints. I have used it on projects that range from changing a light fixture to installing kitchen cabinets. Home Depot usually has this set on Black Friday and Father's Day sales. Never pay full retail. Anyhow that's my 2 cents.

Let me start by saying I was a homebuilder, and aluminum framer for YEARS... and a cordless drill was my main tool. I have had several ryobi tools outlast and out perform MUCH more expensive options. I go Ryobi now because of the price, and variety of tools available. My only complaint in the 10+ yrs that I've used them, is the battery life- as in life of the battery, not how long it holds a charge... seems like I've had to replace them every 3-4 years, BUT, the new, big lithium batt ryobi has is great! Holds a charge forever, and I've been using this set for about 3 yrs now, no issues. so, I go Ryobi for all 18v tools.. Don't get me wrong, there are better tools out there, each co. has their "gem".. but for the price, you really can't beat it..

I'll throw out Rigid...use these everyday for work and they have an amazing warranty. I used DeWalt for years and was replacing them too ofter. Milwaukee really makes some of the best out there...

I'm not a mechanic (but do some work on my own cars), never been in construction or professional building anything.
I got a Black and Decker 20V Lithium cordless drill several years ago and around the house home owner type stuff it has done great. It holds a charge a long long time, it's light - easy to handle and was cheap. My wife even uses it from time to time.
It has also handled some automotive work and carpentry. (works fine drilling deck screws etc..).

Got mine at lowes. They are $45 or so on Amazon

I have used Ryobi for years and for many projects. I use the impact driver for almost everything now. If you can wait until Xmas, they will have great deals on packages of multiple tools at Home Depot.
