I got a dewalt set from my parents as a housewarming gift when I bought my place 4 years ago and have absolutely no complaints about it. It's the 18v set that they don't make anymore though. Can speak on their new stuff. Though if I was paying, I don't know if I really would've paid the price for the dewalt stuff

12 Volt. I love the makita (impact and regular) and the bosch.

If you need more power, Metabo is rated good but expensive. I have a Porter Cable 18v that I bought because the set was very cheap.
I have read that both Milwaukee (although still good) and Dewalt have gone downhill a bit.

18 Volt ... or leave it at the store.
Depends what you're using it for. I prefer my 12 v stuff for most things. If I'm not driving 3 inch nails into decking, the quality 12v tools are fantastic and more practical because of size and convenience.

I have had very good luck with Bosch over the years. I bought my first Bosch 14.4 cordless more than 20 years ago when I built my house and I used it to frame out and drywall my basement. My wife bought me an 18v about 10 years ago for Christmas so I gave the 14.4 to my brother in law. About 2 years ago the 14.4 finally crapped out on him and my sister in law wanted to get him a new one for Christmas so I contacted a friend of mine that worked for Bosch and was able to get an awesome deal on an 18v kit by using his "friend's & family" employee discount. The deal was so good that I decided to buy a new one for myself as well and I gave the old 18v to my son.

The kit that I bought includes a drill/driver, impact driver, 2 batteries, charger and case. It works like a champ and the lithium ion batteries make it extremely light. The other feature that I like is that the impact driver has an LED light where the bits chuck in that makes it easy to see what you are working on. Here is a link to it on Amazon.

Some good advice here. I've used about every brand with varying success. Someone mentioned Craftsman and that's what I've used for years. 19.2 volt to be exact. As with most brands the drill outlasts the batteries. I will say this, however. Todays Craftsman is not your father's Craftsman but still a decent product. Now, if you were talking about a leaf blower.....stay away from ANYTHING Craftsman with a combustion engine! ANYTHING!
Good luck, bro!

These days most big brands will be fine for home use. I usually go with dewalt. More important than the brand is the weight. Go the Home Depot and pick up a few. The new drivers are compact and powerful. Even if your just working around the house the lighter drivers are much easier to work with. The bigger drills are more powerful but heavier and will fatigue you more. I recommend a small 12-18 volt driver first then get the bigger drill if a project warrants it. 90% of the time my 12 volt driver is what I am grabbing.

my 19.2 volt Craftsman is amazing. Battery lasts forever too
I scored mine for cheap when the Sear's Hardware stores closed down here on Long Island. I think I got the kit which included drill, 2 19.2v batteries, charger and flashlight for like $49??? I'm only guessing the price but it was cheap!!

Also got a mini drill for my R/C car projects when I need to make repairs.....

- Would spend 1/2 hour repairing my gas weedeater every time I had to use it. About a dozen times before that "tradition" got old. Hence my journey into electric.

@ZippoGeek +1 on the Dewalt. I beat the everlovin' shit out of my Sawzall. Still fine.

just to throw my 2 cents in.
i'm a big fan of the bosch blue gear. have an impact driver, brushless drill and a rotary hammer drill and they are great. well priced and will last a lifetime for around home. The new brushless motors extend battery life quite a bit IMO.

happy shopping!
buying tools is almost as enjoyable as buying cigars.......almost.

Milwaukee and a spare battery or two and you can thank us all later. That thing will stand up to anything, the battery lasts a good long while, the clutch is great. No complaints at all in 3 years. If you can wait, the Christmas season will bring good savings.
