So this "Heat not flame" technique, does that apply to natural flame lighters and matches or (might be a dumb question) is that flame a less intense flame so u actually touch it to the foot?

I'd say that that's about right. Match = less heat and Torch lighter = more heat so touching with a match wouldn't be as damaging as opposed to touching it with the flame of the torch.
