Just finished watching this show on the Discovery Channel.
Man what these guys go through just so I can have fresh crab legs is amazing.

This week saw one greenhorn (rookie) threaten to jump overboard because he was just overwhelmed by the conditions. The captain hired him right off the dock and it turns out the guy had never been on a boat before ... let alone one riding 40' waves on the Bering Sea. What an idiot!

He did jump.... I just watched it for 2.5 hours....
You must be watching a different show. The guy I was referring to was taken back to the main harbor where he was immediately escorted to the airport.

Tonight's episode was very good! And man what an ending! I could never imagine a 60ft. wave hitting the broadside of the ship, breaking a window and turning the ship on it's side. Made me mad they left us hanging right there.

But, if they survive and are on a lucky ship then they could easily get $20-30k  It has crossed my mind a time or two to go :thinkidea

Me too ... :argh:
And they didn't even mention it on the previews for next week. I'll bet the Discovery Channel cameraman needs some new shorts though.

Now that's reality TV.

Been trying to watch that for the past few weeks, too. It's amazing more men aren't swept overboard. Those guys earn ever buck.

Man, that was one huge wave that rocked that boat last night at the end of the show (60 ft I think they said). I think they said it crippled it and it was without power. Not good in a storm like that.

 I'm just wondering if the ship ever became right-side up again :scratchhe
I believe the ship became disabled and more than likely did not right itself. Did you hear them calling for one of the guys and got no answer back? If you go overboard into water that is about 35 degrees, hypothermia gets you in about 1-2 minutes, then it is lights out baby.

I love these Discovery shows. I missed last weeks episode, so taped last weeks and yesterdays show and caught the last 5 minutes showing that 60' wave.

This ranks as a top 5 occupational hazard of death and injury vs the few number of people that try this. I think 45 dead in the last 10 years. Larry your right, early like first day a ship did go down and only 1 lived, all others died. Not sure how many, but most crews are 5-6 guys.

20-30K that aint that good.... I mean hell the season is what 4 months... not worth it in my book unless you own the damn boat and are making a whole hell of a lot more than that...

I think the Alaskan king crab season, like most of the crab seasons, is by weight only for an entire fleet then there done until next season. They can catch the limit say 1.1 million lbs for the fleet in about 3 weeks. Some boats make 20-30k per deckhand for the large boats. But the smaller boats and one's that have higher expense ratios cause they can not haul as many pots vs fuel etc are not paid nearly as much. Still good money, but for me not worth the risk of losing my life.

right... i got that, i was just sayin that 20-30 grand for 4 months of risking my life is not worth it at all... i mean i understand that these guys dont know anything else but still....

do the math 30 grand for 4 months, is about 5k a month, which isnt bad but consider the risks.... and have fun getting a life insurance policy with that occupational risk...

The season is 4 months long but operates in 8 week bursts for each type of crab. The deckhands get paid per burst. So anywhere from 30 to 50k for 8 weeks work.

yea... i dont know, i am a risk taker and that just seems pretty extreme for me.... but as i mentioned above this is where these guys grew up.... that one guy said that he wanted to be a captain of a crabbing boat ever since he was 4, that just goes to show that crabbing is all he really knows...

Damn I didn't realize that...Also imagine what little expense these guys have too. I'm not sure they're trying to keep up with the Jones either.

Oh and Clay I totally get your point. But, it's the same reason why most line technicians for an electricity company start out at $35-40k, not many people will do it. Crabbing is definitely all these guys know and when the money is that good I don't blame them for sticking with it.
