Do you guys keep your receipts and run through your statement to ensure it is correct? Just for big purchases or everything?

Not really because I usually know what I buy and with online checking I can check my statement any time I want to.

I save some receipts for a while if it's an item that might be subject to return.

Other than that, I only save the receipts that'll be useful for tax purposes.

I'm like that others, I run through my online statements frequently to make sure everything is on the up-and-up. Quicken...and Pocket Quicken...rocks.

I used to never keep receipts, but I started keeping all of them and usually twice a month (when I get time actually) I enter them into MS Money. I do this because I hate hanging on to statements and it allows me to look back indefinatly to find out how much I paid for a certain item and when. I suppose I don't NEED to put in crap like lunches, but if your gonna do it why not do it all right? At least then my accounts match the banks

I just check online every day...just caught $394 in fraud this week actually.

The only receipts I keep are for things with warranties or that may be subject to a possible return.

OK Guys now your into my territory. I'm a credit card guy and your HAVE TO check you records against your charges. There is a huge issue this week alone with VISA and MASTERCARD labeled debit cards. Some major retailer let this data out and its big. Wells FArgo and Bank of America are re-issuing cards in many areas. Yes you can get your money back but only if you catch the fraud. No check the statements, no find the fraud. I make my living leasingthe machines and setting merchants up with processing. I don't like to see people ripped off... Lets be careful out there.

CWS, that would explain why my debit card was replaced this last week with one of a different card number. National City said it had to do with a possible compromise of the account but thats all it said.

Anyway, I quit using my debit about a year ago and have since strictly used my reward credit cards, so if any charges besides checks show up it would be easy for me to spot that.

Checking the statements is almost too late to get the money back, isn't it? I check online daily so I can catch anything right away. If one waits for a statement in the mail they are already halfway to the sixty day limit aren't they?

I never use my debit card for ANYTHING except ATM cash. There is no way in hell I'm giving up the 5% cash back my CC gives me on supermarket purchases, or giving up any of the big purchase protections. I've had one suspicious charge on my CC and as soon as I called, they took care of it. I check my statements weekly for CC and daily for the main bank account.

I usually check my card on line.

I do this on a daily basis. You never know when you are going to get hit by fraud.

On the topic of cards and online now, just as a FYI Citibank allows you to create as many "virtual" credit card numbers for use online as you want. From what I understand they are one use, but I do think it is possible to set one up for reoccuring payments. I know there is/was another major bank that does this but I don't remember the name. I guess once I actually use one of the virtual numbers I could explain it better.

MBNA does this as well. I use it all the time.

The virtual account is a great idea. Credit cards offer more flexibility. All you have to do is challenge the charge to stop the count process.

Now I'm going to really scare you. Be very careful when using ATM's. There is a national band that are using cameras and fake ATM's to catch you card info and PIN. Use banks and not conveience stores (saves on the fee anyway). Check the ATM machine for anything that looks funny like wood paneling or tape. Guys have been know to put a fake reader right over the top of the real one and pick up all the data.

Sorry to be preachy but you wouldn't beleiev the garabage that goes on out here in anorganized fashion.
