I was lucky enough to receive a Casa Fuente from someone and that was probably the best cigar I've ever had.

To answer your question, I started REALLY paying attention when I wrote a couple of reviews for a newb cigar review contest on another cigar forum. They were super amateur (and still are when I try my hand at them now), but taking notes and thinking about the flavors changed the way I smoke.

The big thing to me is you're just smoking rolled up, fermented leaves...do they really taste like chocolate or graham crackers? Not exactly, but scents and flavors in the cigar can trigger food/drink memories for me, and that's how I try to describe my experiences.

The other piece is to check out a flavor wheel as I smoke, and that'll often help job my memory and help me categorize when I'm experiencing.

Another thing to consider is the ring gauge of your cigar which impacts the ratio of wrapper to filler. Big fat cigars, say 54 and up RG for me, at least tend to lose flavor compared the same cigar at 50 RG. My first cigar that I intentionally sat down and smoked was a Punch gran puro in Corona size. I enjoyed it enough to start a whole new hobby. I then ordered the same cigar in Robusto which was a 54 Rg and really noticed a difference. One night I smoked smoked both a sierra (6.5 x 48) and the robusto (5.5 x 54) and refound my original joy in the cigar at the smaller gauge.
