So last night the unthinkable happened. I have five dogs; four pitbulls and a poodle yorki mix - last night three of my pitbulls ganged up against the fourth and nearly beat her lifeless.. I remember hearing the screams and literally jumped out of bed during the middle of the night to separate them. I don't know what got into my dogs, they've never behaved in such a manner and I never expected them too. I've always shown off my dogs as an example of how well such a feared breed can do when kept by a responsible, loving individual.

I'm deeply disturbed, saddened and heartbroken by the events that unfolded last night.. needless to say I will be putting those dogs down it really saddens me to do this but it needs to be done I've had them for over five years now and they are my babies but I just can't get over what they did to poor Donna last night nor can I find a reason for them to behave in such a manner.

I love my dogs, I can't imagine my life without them but at the same time I can't justify what they did to a fellow companion.

Sorry to hear that. My sister had to put down two dogs due to illnesses and one thoroughbred horse (got severely kicked in the leg) over the years and it was horrible for her. I feel for you my brother.

I am sorry to hear about your situation. I've also owned pit bulls and they are some of the most loveable, loyal animals you can own, however, they do not like other animals. I had two females, sisters. We've would have major cook outs every year with tons of kids and the dogs would let the kids pick them them up and play with them and the loved every minute of it. Everyone once in a while the sisters would fight each other and yes it would be bad. The next day, they would be the best of friends. Never attacked or had a problem with people in anyway. They loved affection. I will let you know, that they will continue like this for the remainder of their lives. If you choose not to put them down, you will always need to be cautious when they are around other animals. I've had similiar experiences where they ran with and played with other pets for years, then one day they will turn. Again, I'm sorry for your situation and I know the tough decision that lies ahead.

Daniyal,
I'm so sorry to hear this, it must be terrible what you are thinking right now. Dogs can be family. I know, I have had a few that had to be put down due to age and health. Being that yours are still healthy makes the matter even worse. I'm sure everyone on here sends there condolences, as your are loosing some of your family. Best regards,
Justin.

When multiple dogs even siblings systematically beat up on another there is an underlying reason somewhere. Its not there fault its what the pack does.
May years ago a co workers mom had two English bulldogs and a small terrier mixed as pets for many years. I visited his home one day and after being there for about 15-mins the two BD's pounced on the smaller dog and nearly killed it.

Is this behavior more prevalant in certain breeds? Absolutley.

My two mini schnauzers will sometimes tear into each other when they reach for my wifes attention. Usually its over treats. She takes charge and in the next breath their fine.

Versus putting them down think about sending them to a rescue organization.

Only you as the owner can make the final decision, good luck.

That's terrible to hear, Daniyal. Growing up, I had two dogs who had to be kept separate. The older, smaller dog had been dominant, and when she started to get weaker, the younger dog would challenge her dominance.

I have a particular soft spot for pits, but I also know of a similar case where my old roommate's pit bull grew up from being a sweet, adoring puppy to a dog that viciously and nearly fatally attacked 2 other dogs, despite being raised well. I've long defended pits, and I still believe that they are often unfairly portrayed as monsters; however, there's a particularly strong killer instinct in some of these dogs.

I really can't imagine how hard this decision is for you. You have my sincere condolences.

Daniyal,

So sorry to hear about your dogs. At least (it sounds like) you'll be able to keep Donna and the Poodle mix.

I had a similar experience early last year. We had a pit bull/lab mix we'd gotten from a shelter about 5 years before. She was wonderful with us and our son, had no problem with our friends or people we'd see on walks. Last spring some friends had just arrived to stay with us for the weekend. I brought Misty in on her leash so we could all take her for a walk. Suddenly, she attacked my friend Sue. Her husband tried to push Misty out of the way and she attacked him as well. Hard as I tried to convince myself, we could find no choice but to put her down. Up until then I would have been a good spokesman about how unfair the pit bull laws in some areas are, but now I just don't know.

I'm sorry you have to go through this.

I have two Jack Russell Terriers, they are great dogs and even sleep with each other, but every now and then they get into it to the point I think they will kill one another. I let them get it out of there system, but again they are very small dgs and it is not a two on one situation. I would hate to be in your spot right now. Best wishes.

We all feel your pain. One was killed, two have been putted to sleep and one ate rat poison.
Then that was killed was killed by his own son, the garden was full of blood, i cant ever shake that image away it still looks so real in my head. The one that ate rat poison well, thank god she died because she laid down in front of my dads car and my dad didn't know she was there and well... you can guess the end of that.

I'm truly sorry for what happened.

SPCA might take them or a rescue group if you are trying to let some of them go. I can not imagine our house without the dogs. 5 might just be too many. Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks for the encouragement guys, I know this is a community I can truly depend on for support.. the good news is Donna has been recovering better than I expected and hasn't let the unfortunate event affect her appetite. I'm some what glad/relieved that they didn't decide to gang up on Aaloo (the poodle/yorkie mix) as I don't think I would've ever been able to make it out to the yard to save her.

For the moment all the dogs have been separated which makes for quite a noisy house since they don't like being isolated from one another. I'm looking into placing them in other homes but am not sure if that would be wise.. I know these dogs love me and would never even think of hurting me but I can no longer place that trust in them when it comes to a third party so I find myself leaning towards the most unpleasant decision one can ever make.

Meg: your situation sucks worse than mine I'm very sorry about your dogs and I hope it wasn't your great dane's that happened to.. those dogs are gorgeous.

Kyle: I've been on that site quite a few times never realised they operated a forum as well thank you very much I will post there soon.

Jetexas: Amen brother! my dogs have never been locked or caged for a day in their life and usually have the run of the house even with guests or children around and I'm glad that they have never attacked anyone.

Everyone else thank you for your kind words I know some of you have had to put down your dogs in the past and every time I've read such a post my heart's sunk and have hoped that I would never have to make such a decision. I hope none of you are ever faced with the situation I am.

That's exactly what happened to me and why it was so hard. Sorry you have to go through this. But glad that Donna and Aaloo are ok.
