Daniyal--What a horrible situation to be in, I'm very sorry for you!

One question--are the males altered / fixed? If not, that would probably help. If so, perhaps it was simply too much with a 3:1 male:female ratio. I wonder if you tried putting, say, 2 of the dogs in a kennel for a while if the remaining male would be better behaved...

I don't know and am certianly no expert, but I feel your pain at how heartbreaking it would be to have to put them down. And yet if there is a safety issue for the rest of the animals (and people?) in your house, then obviously you have to do what you have to do.

I'll say a prayer for you and this tough situation. We're with you, man--not only are we your Brothers but there are may animal lovers here as well. Keep us posted.
Nate

so sorry to hear about your troubles. i feel your pain!

my two dogs fought when i went on vacation last spring. my daughter tried to break them up and one bit her through the thumbnail, breaking her thumb! i got rid of her (haha - the dog!). then, while in ventura last month (in chuck's backyard at that), i get the call that the other got out of the dog run, and was hit by a car. with injuries too severe, she was put down. i think i have to stay away from owning dogs for a while....

That's AWFUL! Man, lots of rough experiences here lately.

I never had animals growing up (my dad was allergic), but my mom grew up 1/2 time on a farm with many cats, dogs, bobcats and of course farm animals. In that kind of setting, she lost a great many animals in her formative years and the "farmer mentality" was one of utility over affection. The purpose of cats was to keep the barn and house clear of pests, not for companionship. Although she loved her pets, when they died they were simply replaced and it wasn't a huge deal.

Honestly, I don't know how I would have handled that growing up. Even today if my two cats died my wife and I would be heartbroken! I guess I've become to urbanized.

What a bummer I hate to hear this. I have a buddy with a HUGE pink nose pit. 105 huge. Was always like a big teddy bear. Loveable great with kids, would bark at cats, but was a very loveable dog. He would listen/obey every command and come when called. Then one day he jump up from the porch and ran across the street and demolished the neighbors poodle. and yes a very bloody demolition. He ignored his owners very loud commands, that would have normally stopped him in his tracks when chasing a rabbit or something. I am worried, that he has 2 small kids and what is now a proven unpredictable dog. I know they can be great, but they are an unstable breed and can snap at any point. I am truly sorry to hear you have to put them down, but I think it's the right descision. To give them away just puts another person in danger.

Pit Bulls are far from unstable, if anything, they are the most stable breed out there today. Not to mention they were considered the number one dog of choice for families during WW1-era.

When fallen into the wrong hands..thats something else.

Like your friend Dprice, he should NEVER have had his bully breed off leash in front of his house (let alone, anywhere!). Bull breed dogs (pits, boxers, ambulls, staffords, ETC) are dogs that have pure devotion to their owner. 100 times the fact of any other breed, and I'm sure other bull breed advocates would agree.

The stability of bully breed dogs is sound (unless you have some back yard breed dog whos parents were never temperament tested). An American Pit Bull Terrier is one of the most calm - stable breeds to date.

And remember, "pit bull" is a reference to bully breeds in general, your friends dog Dprice was not an American Pit Bull Terrier, not at 105 pounds anyways. APBT males max out around 60 pounds. Anything over that, it was cross breed several times with other breeding stock (like Mastiffs), to get that big bulky "badass" look.

Sorry to hear this. I had a pit for fourteen years best dog I ever owned. He was great with people and other dogs untill they would chalenge him then he would just change in an instant. never let him hurt another dog but I was always right there and all I had to do was say NO and he would stop. They are so different from any other breed. Pat

That sucks bro, I'm very sorry for your loss, its not something you can recover from easily but I do recommend you get another dog preferably just one this time around. I'm strongly leaning towards owing just one dog at a time from here on.

I agree a 100% with this pits are some of the most affectionate and temper tested dogs out there -- though they have a tendency to be dog aggressive but that's true for most bull breeds; I've had boxers in the past and they too wouldn't be the friendly with a stranger's dog.
