SURVEY FINDS CONSUMERS PREFER POSTAL MAIL OVER E-MAIL (Direct Newsline June 12, 2007)
Direct mail is the preferred medium for 73% of existing customers who receive new product announcements and offers and for 70% of prospective customers, based on survey findings released by Pitney Bowes Inc.
"The research clearly shows that consumers still prefer (postal) mail over e-mail," said in statement Stacy DeWalt, vice president of vertical market development and marketing at Pitney Bowes.
Only 18% of consumers surveyed preferred receiving e-mail, rather than postal mail.
The survey found that consumers are less likely to discard unopened postal mail than they are to discard unsolicited e-mail about new products.
Survey findings indicated the consumers consider post mail less intrusive because it doesn't interrupt other activities. Postal mail is perceived as being more convenient to read at leisure, as well as being
less high-pressured; compared to e-mail.

Email here, I most of the emails I get for other products are lists that I have signed up for. However most of the shit that comes thru the postal service is the same thing week after week.

Sounds like that survey may have been worded a little weird or something.

It's hard for me to imagine someone preferring junk mail at home over spam.

Weird.

They sure didn't survey me .... 95% of my postal mail goes right into the recycle bin.

I think mass / junk mail should be outlawed.

....who receive new product announcements and offers...
NEITHER.

I am exposed to more than enough marketing. I don't want spam or junk postal mail. I wish it would all go away. I will NEVER buy a product from spam. If I get junk mail, and remember who sent it, I will make sure not to buy anything from them as well.

Haven't you all had enough?

Spam goes right in to the filter and is gone. I really like getting those great advertisements in the mail how they can save me millions on my mortgage. Actually regular mail would include cigar catalogs so postal it is.

Helpful link for various ways to stop the junk mail.

http://www.organizewithcarol.com/reducingjunkmail.html

I joined the DMA (direct mailing association) do not mail list for free years ago. Within a month, my junk mail seemed to be reduced by about 65-75%. I toss almost everything and shread free offers so no can use my information that some of those offers contain. If they charge a fee $5 every five years is still worth it to me.

I wouldn't even know how to respond if I got a real letter in the mail. Other than cards and packages I just get junk mail.

Am I reading this wrong? I thought this article is dealing solely with direct mail marketing and unsolicited mailings.

I definitely love getting things in the mail but would absolutely have unsolicted junk emailed where i can simply filter and delete it rather then mailed to me by the Postal Service.

my wife filters my usps mail, otherwise I shitcan everything. I do not get my junk e-mail due to the filters I guess.

I like to receive a letter or information thru the mail over e-mail from known senders or known places like dept. stores etc.

Agreed, Ted. I seem to recall that a few years back there was a suit brought to the SCOTUS (might have been federal appeals circuit) by those wishing to outlaw non-solicitated mail. My recollection is that the SCOTUS ruled in favor of the JUNK MAILERS due to freedom of speech/expression! They decided that limiting the mailer's would damage their businesses as well. Detractors were enraged. The logic was extremely flawed since you can choose to ignore someone's free speech in every other venue. . .:angryteet

With the way the Postal Service is begining to change their rates they may eventually make the business of direct mailing too expensive.

We can only hope.
