If so how? classes? professional instruction? IPSC? CMP? dry fire? I'm not one for state mandated training, i view it as an infringement on the right to bear arms, however I view it as extremely important to keep yourself sharp should the need arise for you to defend yourself. So what do you guys do to train?

Mandatory range time - WOOHOO!

I love free bullets, auto-turn targets, Pact timers and steel!

Mandatory quarterly qualification. Must score 210 out of 250 to qualify. 3 of the shoots in an indoor range and the AQ on an outdoor range. They also throw in a night shoot once in awhile.(Handgun/flashlight)
Fun fun fun..

Targetmasters (http://targetmasterswest.com/) 1-2 times a month with the wifey. Followed by a pint or two of Guinness and of course a stick or two.

Fun part about going there is that you can rent before you buy so the first 50-100 rounds and no having to clean.

They used to have two locations until a couple of idiots decided to come in, rent a handgun and taste test some slugs.

I shoot a couple hundred rounds through the handgun each month at an indoor range. I also shoot trap and skeet whenever I can, and at my parent's house we can shoot our big guns up to 250 yards. I practice on prairie dogs about once a month as well.

Best place is to find some land, with an embankment, tons of rounds, paper, steel and bowling pin targets and blast away.

Other than that, join a local shooting club.

Good luck!:gangfire:

I'm whats called a Primary Marksmanship Instructor in the Marine Corps which is the highest level of Instructor on a range aside from the Chief Warrant Officer and Gunner of course. I just got done with a six month tour at Parris Island MCRD teaching recruits how to shoot. Some have never even held a weapon until they got to boot camp. To me Marksmanship is the single Most important foundation of the whole Makeup that is the Combat Mindset. My Mentor is an olympic gold medalist in Beijing he works with me in Hawaii which has some outrageous gun laws by the way!

IDPA, dry fire, range visits. Will attend classes once my schedule and bank account permits it.
Personally, I think something along the lines of firearms safety should be mandatory - via the school systems.

Not as much as I'd like. Wish I had some acreage to go out on shoot on. I probably go out shooting 6-8 times a year.

Owning a firearm makes you no more prepared for a self defense situation than owning violin makes you prepared for a solo with the Boston Philharmonic.

Train, train and then train some more.

I try to get as much range time as I can at my shooting club. I usually get there 3 times a month. Like the OP said, practice is an important part of owning guns (not to mention, a whole lot of fun too).

Sight alignment, sight picture, breathing/trigger control, and a good position... these basic fundamentals sound so simple up front but take a lot of time/effort to perfect. I go to the range every chance I get and can afford. Dry firing is also fairly effective but nothing can replace trigger time. I've shot Service Rifle/High Power/Long Range/Mid Range off and on since 2000 and been to Camp Perry for the NRA nationals 4 times. (Classified as Master and still need 12 points to leg out, missed the last President's 100 I shot in by about 20 people)

I love me some shooting!

awesome! Ive been to Camp Perry twice for Marine Corps Championships! I'm about 6 points away from Distiguished Rifle and 10 points away from Pistol. Its hard to dedicate and pracice with back to back deployments though. 3 out of the last 5 years I've been in Afghanistan.:frownno:
My Instructor and Competition coach is Olympic Gold Medalist Keith Sandersen! Hes an E-7 in the Army, He did an interservice transfer to be on the Olympic team.

Dry fire from your carry rig at different targets.

100 rounds a week of handgun practice executing specific drills. 1" stick-on dots are torture

Professional instruction when I get the available funds.

I used to train more, but since BO took office, ammo prices have at least doubled. Fortunatley, I have a .22 conversion kit for my Kimber. But now that I'm stationed in Germany, the only shooting I get to do is M16 or M9 every couple years.

I wonder what ammo prices will be like once I get back...

We used to have to qualify 3X a year...indoor/outdoor. We got it moved down to once a year which was just awful. No way should a LEO only qualify once a year. We are back up to 2X a year now with some extra open ranges thrown in there.
