Number of breweries means nothing. The below explains my opinion that the West Coast has the best beer.

Deschutes > Dog Fish Head
Stone > Flying Dog
Russian River > Smuttynose
Ballast Point > Victory
Lost Abbey > Brooklyn
Bear Republic > Troegs
Firestone Walker > Magic Hat
The Bruery > Harpoon
Alesmith > Wyerbacher
Anchor > Lion
Speakeasy > Feglee's
Alpine > Boston Brewing
Great Divide > Yuengling

LOL...like I said, just an opinion. Nothing more than a my team is better than your team statement. As we all know from cigars, different people like different things. There are really good breweries all across the US, and everyone will have their own opinions. I am just glad that we have so many great options when it comes to beer these days.

Put me down as a believer in that authors opinion. I've sampled lots of beers from all over....but I've no real need to look outside what I can get here locally..

Living in a pretty popular beer area (across the river from Portland) I'll contend there is no other state putting out the quality of IPAs than what Cali is producing. Some states might have a couple goods ones here and there, but man...they got IPAs figured out there IMO.

Some would argue that we are redefining the IPA... some breweries are labeling IPAs "English" or "Traditional" and "West Coast" or "California" in order to distinguish the sub-genres.

I think it's all relative to the available beers to you as well. We can't get as many East Coast beers here on the West Coast and vice versa. I have a great beer shop close to me, but some East Coast breweries simply do not distribute to the West etc or we only get limited beers from the breweries where they would sell more of the limiteds close to their geographic area.
